Not that anyone was looking for my 2 cents, but I think it's an insight I would like to share. A couple of years back I was in the same shoes as a lot of you, I pre-ordered something, paid a deposit and got on a list. I basically expected to be updated, and I expected prompt feedback, and was following up with sellers (in hindsight maybe more than I should). My attitude back then was "I paid for it, their excuses are not my problem"
Since that time I have placed myself on the other side of the fence, with the 1/6 items I have been offering along with the decal stuff. Being on this side really opens your eyes up and has allowed me to be much more understanding. I am not perfect, and I still get excited about things I order, but a lot of those impulses have faded away or the intensity has diminished.
I don't know Jack personally, but I do have empathy for him on this project, because I see a lot of this in the things I offer myself. We get into this as an extension of our own passions for collecting, we as artists enjoy making something from nothing, and be able to wow others with our art. In most cases, customers are not being charged for the long hours of R&D, the trials and errors of casting, painting, sanding, sewing, etc. We go into these projects and do okay, but they aren't always bank breakers. Those of us with full time careers or jobs, plus families make it even tougher. You want to finish what you start, you want to make others happy, you are leaving your 9-6 day job with every fiber of your being intending on wrapping up someones order after work. The wife calls on your drive home and is feeling sick, something at home breaks down, you get called back into the office...just life being life. When we spend 4 hours after work on custom projects, thats 4 hours away from our wives/husbands/children, and there is no compensation for that.
None of us intentionally want people to wait on things they are excited about, but there are other things that come up that cannot wait or be ignored. I for one LOVE the movie 'Drive', I did the decals for Jack's full set, and I even have a full figure on order. I CANNOT wait to get it, but I would much, much rather him take 4 more months if that means the final product will be that much better. You can tell if someone rushes a job because they are just sick of being nagged about it.
The behavior of others can sometimes make you question as artists, if you want to keep offering product because you ask yourself "is it worth the effing hassle anymore" You start getting blamed for how long the post office takes, but at the same time the buyer didn't want to opt for the faster shipping, they start threatening to open a paypal claim against you because of a delay, and some days you just want to say "F" it because the payday is not always worth the stress.
Again, I'm far from perfect, but I know that Jack is a true artist, and from my communications with him, a stand up dude. He will deliver the goods when he can. If he is having to take the time every 3 days to take new photos, upload them, color correct them, crop them, resize them, upload them to photobucket, copy and paste the URLs and then type a 3 paragraph apology on the delay, every few days, that's literally hours he could be using to paint and finish the orders. If he is having to reply to 10 PMs a week asking "Any updates Bro?", that's another hour or so he could be painting instead.
I just wanted to throw out a different perspective to think about.
