This is not accurate. If you shop around you will find that many shippers will allow them to "work" on the way over greatly reducing the expenses.

I think it depends on what carrier you use. I know USPS has a flat rate for dead ones.

Yeah, but the delays can be a big pain.. especially if not packed well.

That I believe is true but my closest USPS office is in the middle of a nunnery(true) and they have a strict no dead hooker shipping policy(true).
