Should I forget everything I know about Toy collecting.

Haha... great conversation that psychologists all over the world would lose sleep over studying.

I happen to think moderation is the key, like pretty much everything else. It's why I whole-heartily subscribe to the idea of the "grail figure." What's that one figure you want more than anything to have represent you and your tastes displayed on your shelf? What's that one figure you want to gaze upon every day, knowing that it will continually bring you joy? For me, it's always a project... always something that I can turn into a masterpiece (whether unique or partially unique). Personally, I don't want a sixth scale figure that looks like a toy. First of all, I'm not going to be playing with it (I'll be displaying it). Second, I want it to reflect some real craftsmanship and artistry. Third, I want to there to be multiple ways in which I can customize it, that is, make it DIFFERENT than anything else that's out there.

List goes on and on... suffice to say, I always choose quality over quantity. One figure to rule them all (or maybe two or three ;)

I make entire Shutterfly photo books chronicling my customs (doing it right now with Jon Snow), if that gives you any idea as to what I mean by "project."

No "toys" here, my friends! But I also realize that everybody has their own reasons for being involved in this hobby and that's what makes this community so interesting and fun.

1. Are you normally this compulsive with new things you like?
a. Yes, and I am under counseling for it.
b. No....I fully immersive myself in my likes.
c. I currently reside in a mental insitution.

Joking aside......sounds like compulsive behavior with justification. For a millionaire its not as much of a problem, if thats you , enjoy! If like most of us you have to pay bills and this compulsive buying affects your ability to do other things then you need to put a limit on your spending.

I suggest a yearly budget on figures......and buy only what you REALLY like.

Most figures are terrible investments....especially new ones.....older figure will likely keep value or rise based on availability/demand of course, economics 101.

If you want to buy and investment buy gold or silver for the long haul....

I only collect Hot Toys Iron Man figures, and Voltron figures. I don't have every Voltron, I am still missing the original Voltron toys from the 80s. But I can't afford them or find a complete set that isn't missing a lot of pieces.

Only buy what you like, never ever buy for the sake of completism if the figure you're buying doesn't look as good as your favourite figures. And think about 'thinning out' your collection now and then, you'll appreciate what you have left much more.

Most Hot Toys figures these days (with notable exceptions like BVS Bats and Supes) either retain their original retail value or dip below. If you're not buying very selectively -- and it seems you're not -- you'll end up losing money on your "investments."

IMHO, the investment line is only good for justifying the collection to people who otherwise wouldn't understand your hobby. It shouldn't be a basis for collecting because, let's face it, it seldom works out.

I've been buying happiness since I was like 19 haha. Doing the same thing for 7 years gets old. So to keep it fresh, I try to breakdown the science of buying things and over complicate it. It adds a level of excitement haha

Amen....this is why I collect. My modest collection is in our play room which is just before I leave the house.....so I get to see my collection every day before work...it always makes me smile....
