sell all my collectibles and save up for a house?

no seriously... no joke..

I'm 18...

and I'm thinking I can afford one by the age of 29....

How many collectibles do you have? What is their total value?

I kept all my "toys" and still bought my house.

If you have 11 years to plan and save, do you really need to sell off ALL of your collectibles?

I'd recommend thinning the collection out a tad and using any of the accumulated $$ as a base for your savings. Unless you really believe you need to get out of collecting cold turkey.

Also think about it this way: If you set aside just $100 a month between now and when you're 29 you'd have over $13,000 saved up (BEFORE interest).

Make a savings plan (with a goal) and stick to it with discipline. You can do it and none of your hobbies would even really need to be sacrificed.

(Stay out of credit card debt, too... that's key).

i think your biggest concern at 18 should be to find a decent job to help you buy that house. are you going to school or do you have a job lined up already?

I agree with what everyone said. It's so awesome that you want to start saving to buy a house! That is a fantastic goal! I would also think that you could hold onto your collection and maybe be more selective in future purchases - then that $$ you would have spent you can put away towards a house. I'm not selling any of my pieces - but I did just cancel over $1000 in pre-orders to help with some of the costs of buying a home. I'm not planning on buying any more for awhile...but then I'm planning on getting a home in less than a year. You are giving yourself 11 years.....you've got a lot of time to start saving.

I go to school fulltime and work part time at spencers... I worry now because all I hear is garbage about everything.. I can tell you foremost that I'm not into politics but I know I should get into it.. but I'm worried.

Save what you can (even if it's just a few bucks here and there) and stay out of debt and you should be fine.

I actually took the bus to school for the first month.. and it saved a bunch of money... but the ride was an hour and a half long.. and not to mention those god awful plastic seats..

I'd keep the ones the like the most and sell the ones that don't mean much. Start saving now like Irish says.

You have to have a hobby. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Yours is an interesting question. I'm sort of glad that I fell upon this hobby AFTER I already bought a home. Because I could see it seriously sinking some money and skewing my priorities. Owning a home (and making good on the payments without gov't assistance ) should be your first financial priority once your 30+ IMO, well above any silly statue. But you're only 18. I wouldn't be worried about trying to buy a home yet. Finish school first. Rent apartments and have parties and trash them. If you're that concerned about saving, stop buying new collectibles, or at least minimize, but you shouldn't have to sell your existing stuff, unless the price is right.
