Quick weekend project. Classed-up my favourite piece:

Nice, ZE! I've gotten asked about making a custom snow base for this but I'm diggin' the simple, classy look of that base. I'd love to see that with a clear rod instead of the black one too.

It's a $9 CAD Hemma lamp base from Ikea.

I twisted off the bulb socket and cut the cord, leaving behind the hollow tube.

Both ends are threaded; I used my jeweller's saw to make short work of the threaded piece on one end, then wrapped a spare drill bit in duct tape to fit snugly in the top and protect the Probe's plastic body. (Always wrap it!)

The junction is invisible and secure, but when I get my hands on the right sized wooden dowel I'll make a less makeshift job of it, for the benefit of my own OCD.

I think these will make fine stands for other items like helmets or models. Maybe a 1/6 speeder bike.

Being made of metal, they're quite secure and have foam feet to protect your surfaces.

Thanks! I thought about that; in my view there are a couple of options besides this: you could get a white lamp base from Ikea for a different look, or go full acrylic base.

Personally, I think full acrylic would work better than a clear pole in a coloured stand. There's that guy who makes clear 1/6 stands out of acrylic...he could do it.

I didn't choose white because I wanted a smooth transition with no visual break.

I really like the extra height, it's perfect for viewing from my couch. They have a 35cm version of this base as well if you want a shorter stand for whatever reason.

For sure. It does look great hovering over snow and ice; I'd like to make a larger Hoth-style base as an option.

Of course, now we've seen one on Jedha too!
