I agree about the tail, but I actually wonder if the new version might be a little too big. He seemed like he might be a bit taller than he should be in relation to the Luke figure in that video. He should be shorter than a human. Of course I'm not sure how John Coppinger in the photo compares in height with Mark Hamill.

Looks almost a bit sunburnt maybe, but it's looking a whole lot better than you seem to think! As you say, I think it just needs some blending and also maybe his belly needs to have less green. And maybe make the orange a touch less bright (but not by much.) Making the belly more orange than green will make the face seem less standout orange-ish.

Thank you for the advice and guidance; very much appreciated. When I get back to painting the big guy, I will definitely incorporate your suggestions.

I had trouble resisting the urge to try to simulate what I associate with the movie Jabba (greener body and deeper shades), even though I know that it's a distortion/illusion from the dark lighting. Set photos like the one below better illustrate how he'd look under more conventional lighting (such as what's used to display figures), and all of your suggestions are consistent with that actual true color scheme. It just looked wrong to me when I tried it because of so many other reference images that reflect the greener hues and deeper oranges. Lots and lots of work left.

Did you strip the original paint or wipe the figure with rubbing alcohol or anything before starting the repaint, or did you just start painting?

I painted directly onto the figure as is. I tested with a little dry-brushing on his chin (well, *one* of his chins) first, and found it really conducive to absorbing paint well enough to just keep going. And since Sideshow apparently aimed for the color scheme of a giant slimy booger, rather than going for an actual Jabba vibe, the green saves lots of time as an undercoat for just detailing and darkening over on the actual green areas.

That Luke figure is also behind Jabba rather than side-by-side so you may get a little more height there. Of course, who knows how tall the SS Luke figure is and if its accurate?

But threepio is about the same height as Luke and here he is with Jabba in both positions...

It's always difficult to judge height from film, and ultimately it doesn't matter all that much. But looking at the shot of Jabba and all the aliens above shows that Jabba is a lot shorter than Bib Fortuna as well.

Then there's Bib leaning over to talk to Jabba:

Michael Carter is apparently 6'4".

So maybe Jabba isn't too far off.

Well, that "Jabba" was just made for a convention and bears very little resemblance to the actual puppet, so it is definitely not something I would use for a height reference. Plus they are all standing way in front of him, so you can't tell how tall it is anyway.

Bib is tall though, as pointed out above. Again, 3PO is Luke's height. But here's another picture with Boba Fett who is slightly shorter than Han and slightly taller than Luke.

If someone wants to put the SS 3PO and the HT Boba Fett next to their 2007 Jabba we could tell pretty easily is he's "smallish" or not.

I hope you'll do this test when you get the new SS Jabba in also, to see if he's too big.

Photo not for Jabba, but for John Coppinger with reference to the others.

I think Sideshow seems to have done a pretty damn good job with Jabba's height and overall proportions on this new figure. It sets the bar for HT to have to come up with something even better if they decide to make a Jabba of their own. If they do make one, I can't wait to see how they differentiate it from Sideshow's. If they can make the skin something more akin to rubber than plastic or resin (thus making actual posing of arms and tail possible), and nail the painting nuances as HT definitely can, it'll be epic.

As I mentioned before, a poseable tail for starters is a must and likely. Moveable eyes too. Perhaps poseable mouth -- open or shut.

Anything "rubber" starts to make me nervous where HT is concerned, but I'd love some sort of "real-feel' skin too.

Yes the height seems to be debatable... but bigger looks good in this case. The tail is what matters the most comparing size of new and old. I personally really like the straight tail and prefer it.
If HT will make him... eventually maybe. But isn’t Yoda and Maul the only aliens they have done? Or am I forgetting some? ...and with that in mind I don’t think the chances are that good any time soon.

Those two and Chewbacca are all i believe.

I'm not sure a posable Jabba that looks good and lasts more than a couple years seems possible. I think Sideshow had the right idea with the swapouts, and they actually executed the seams pretty well it appears. The price remains the biggest problem, but there are also some other nits. Paint apps remain below what I imagine HT would come up with and that damn straight tail. I love the tongue mouth but they overdid the slobber and the paint looks cartoony. The eyes look as dead as something Sideshow would have produced years ago, probably fixable with some gloss coat but why didn't they do that? I'm also very curious in hand what people think about the material the whole thing is made of.

The eyes could use a little more detail as well. They're just orange and black looks like. I'd try adding some small yellow details in the iris just to make them pop before I gave it a coat of gloss.
