Seems an easy out. They can do both and give those fans that can make it a bonus. Maybe they are feeling the economic pinch too.

It’s a really expensive show, especially with their booth. And they sold precious little on the show floor to offset the cost, unlike Funko. Just a bad strategy all around, so I’m not surprised they bailed.

Pretty sure they did Sideshow Con last year but still went to SDCC. The announcement doesn’t say directly they aren’t going to SDCC as far as I’m seeing.

It kind of makes sense if you ask me. Saves them the cost of having a booth and transporting everything. Plus they can hold live events from their headquarters to showcase items.

Hoping to see decent stuff at sdcc, pretty certain Blitzway will show MJ smooth criminal. But as for their own show I don't have high hopes.

I see that now. Apparently you have to dig a little deeper as it's not directly on the main page that was linked.

With the title of the thread, linking directly to the page that says so would've been more straight forward. The main page just states that they're doing Sideshow Con again with no mention of skipping SDCC '23

How about you just concentrate your efforts on customer service?

I know it ultimately comes down to cost cutting. I'm in marketing so I'm curious to see what the cost/benefit breakdown is for Sideshow.

Being at the convention physically is significantly more expensive but it also means exposing new people to the products. Though I would guess only a relatively small number of attendees are likely to actually become new customers.

Their online cons feel more insular; it feels like the only people that really pay attention to those are existing fans and customers. I'm not sure how much new money the online only con model draws in. But at least it doesn't cost much for them to run.

Ultimately it doesn't really affect us either way since the vast majority don't go to the con and we'd just be looking at pictures and videos of the reveals anyway. Though I suppose any exclusives, promos, gifts, etc. being online only makes it more accessible which is a benefit.

Makes sense as they can control the presentation of product with lighting and photography and reduce costs. Not great for fans as I prefer to see things in person or photos from multiple sources without slick production plus their booth was a big crowd and advertising draw. Hot Toys holding back some announcements for their own summer show might have had an impact.

There is an overseas dealer that I still talk to, after all these years, he observed to me, that in general, this hobby on the production side is in pretty bad financial shape right now.

IMHO, SSC should start to scale to shift directions domestically for the sake of their long term survival. War is coming. I'm not here to get political about it, it's just that it will kill the entire pipeline of production overseas. It's inevitable at this point.

SSC has endured for the long term as a distributor. What happens when there is nothing to distribute?

It won't all end tomorrow, but this "Golden Age" is going to hit a decline phase very soon. It's the cyclical nature of things.

It's been a good run. I appreciate all the early years when SSC was so generous to so many collectors and to so many people here. I'll always appreciate that.
