Why would they purposely use an inferior backstock as replacements? If a buyer was astute enough to notice a lesser flaw, they're more than likely going to notice a greater one. That means Sideshow pays for the return of the original, the reshipment of the replacement, the return of the replacement, and then they lose the sale completely.
i am saying they make replacement parts separately and very often those are of inferior quality. For example my gollum PF statue had a minor paint bleed in his nose, they sent me a replacement which were far worse missing many paint details on the skin when you compare them side by side. They then sent me a SECOND replacement, this one had an almost orange skin tone as if gollum just came back from hawaii with a tan and also missing the paint details.
I was pretty pissed and the rep told me flatout they keep replacement stocks separately than new orders, and they cant just send me a new statue (after i return the old one) it has to be from replacement stockpile. Even he think it was stupid. I had to return the old one and go through the whole refund process, destroy both replacement bodies, then place a new order. The new order was perfect, it has the same detail/quality(without the paint nose bleed) as the original.
Same story with my leia vs jabba statue.
Bottomline, if the issue is with a minor accessories like a hand holding a gun etc..its' fine just to get a replacement part, but if the problem is with the main statue or part of the main body, then you are better off just returning it and order a new one instead of playing russian roulette with the replacements because if the new orders are soldout then you are screwed, they usually only allow 1 replacements, 2 if you make your case but after that it's just a $30 credit to keep the bad statue or return it for refund. Both options suck if the statue is soldout and selling for 2x on ebay.
EDIT: also forgot to mention, the rep said they actually took the photo i sent and went to the warehouse trying to find one that match the skin color of my original in the replacement stockpile and couldnt. So this is not a complaint about their customer service but the product replacement itself.
