Konami Responds to Silent Hills Cancellation Claims
Publisher coy on details, but insists it will continue to develop the Silent Hill series; Confirms Reedus departure.
by Rob Crossley on April 27, 2015

Update: Silent Hills has been cancelled, Konami has officially confirmed.

Original story follows:

Amid mounting speculation that the Silent Hills project may have been cancelled, Konami has issued a statement that suggests the game is, at the very least, undergoing major changes.

When the Silent Hills project was first announced, Walking Dead star Norman Reedus was named as its lead actor, lending both his face and voice to the game. But on Monday Konami confirmed to GameSpot that "our contract period with Reedus has expired," following the actor's claims on Twitter that the entire project has been axed.

Regarding those rumours, Konami wouldn't discuss the Silent Hills project specifically, but said: "We will continue to develop the Silent Hill series."

Grave concerns over the Silent Hills game began in March, when GameSpot revealed that Hideo Kojima--Konami's most renowned developer and a director on the project--is preparing to leave the company once work on Metal Gear Solid 5 is completed.

In the weeks that followed, a slow trickle of revelations continued to suggest that Kojima Productions' relationship with Konami has become complicated. In late March, it emerged that Kojima's regular podcast series was put on hiatus. Then on Sunday, players discovered that the PS4 game P.T.--a playable teaser that was essentially a grand marketing initiative to publicise the Silent Hills Project, would be removed from the PlayStation Store in a matter of days.

Director Guillermo del Toro, who was initially signed as a co-director of Silent Hills, was reported to have said on Sunday that his collaboration with Konami "is not gonna happen."

Silent Hills Cancelled, Konami Confirms
Kojima Productions project no longer in development; Konami says it is open to future collaboration with Hideo Kojima and del Toro.
by Rob Crossley on April 27, 2015

Following a second day of disquieting rumors concerning the Silent Hills project, on Monday, publisher Konami confirmed that it has terminated plans to develop the game.

Although Konami initially declined to comment on the matter when contacted early on Monday, later in the day it issued a statement to GameSpot, putting speculation surrounding the title to rest.

"Konami is committed to new Silent Hill titles, however the embryonic Silent Hills project developed with Guillermo del Toro and featuring the likeness of Norman Reedus will not be continued," it said.

Confirmation of the project's termination comes weeks after it was revealed that Hideo Kojima, a director of the project, is preparing to leave Konami. Power struggles between staff at Kojima Productions and Konami had escalated to the stage where the publisher has begun seeking a new leadership team to work on future Metal Gear games.

Such developments had raised questions about the future for Silent Hills, a game that was supposed to be directed by Kojima and developed in partnership with director del Toro.

On Sunday, del Toro was quoted as saying to fans that his collaboration with Konami "is not gonna happen." Meanwhile, Konami confirmed to GameSpot early on Monday that its partnership with Norman Reedus, the actor initially signed to star in Silent Hills, had "expired."

Such questions were raised when it emerged that P.T., a playable teaser that was essentially a grand marketing initiative to publicize the Silent Hills Project, would be removed from the PlayStation Store in a matter of days.

However, the publisher appears open to the possibility of future collaborations with Kojima and del Toro.

"In terms of Kojima and del Toro being involved, discussions on future Silent Hill projects are currently underway, and please stay tuned for further announcements," the publisher said in a second statement, sent to Kotaku.

"We will continue to develop the Silent Hill series," the publisher added.

I could care less about Reedus's involvement, but it's pretty saddening that such a revolutionary game will not meet the bar that was set by the teaser. They'll go forward with it, and it will be like any ****** Silent Hill they've done recently.

EDIT Just read the second post. Well that's that, it's a dead game. I dunno if I want him working with Del Toro outside of this, since Koji has such a hard on for Pacific Rim.

ZOE3 is dead too. :(

I just hope they don't lock the demo on my PS4, P.T was such a cool game to have unsuspecting buddies come over and crap their pants.

Man this is so infuriating, anybody got a smoke?

The removal of PT from the PSN is exactly why I hope physical media never goes away entirely.

Same here.

So damn depressing...

Another cancelled horror game to add to the list... Konami is digging their own grave

I hope Del Toro and Kojima get to work together one day, I always wanted Kojima to make a horror game

Whether or not Kojima was at fault is somewhat irrelevant. Yes he could have been a total A-hole but if you're looking at Konami as a whole you have to ask your self the bottom line question, are we better off without him? I think they are pretty much done. And from what I hear about Kojima from those who worked under him at the LA studio, he is a pretty cool guy...demanding sure but nothing negative. Kojima is also a big name that carries weight in the gaming industry. I don't think you get Reedus or Del Toro on board without a guy like Kojima. Good luck getting that kind of attention on future titles Konami. And this is all our perspective of him outside of Japan. He is godly there...Konami is surely taking more flack for this in Japan than anywhere else. If you are a betting man, which do you choose...Kojima and a new IP or Konami without Kojima?

It's tragic about what has happened to Silent Hills, but at least Kojima's finally freed from Metal Gear Solid. However, it sucks immensely that he's being fired by Konami. Without the financial backing from a major publisher, he won't be able to develop blockbuster games anymore.

I can't see him getting picked up by another company and having the amount of control he had under Konami. There's going to be too many cooks in his next project.
