Just like comic book films, change the uniforms, even if only slightly, and everyone gets to sell more merchandise.
With Star Wars I have a cunning plan: stick to the original three films.
So far, so good. Haven't fallen off the wagon yet.
The trooper progression in the OT seemed natural, because they had specific roles.
The main problem is that Rogue One is a prequel, so any new troopers will be ones that were naturally absent from the next three films. So not seen aboard the first Death Star, the Empire's flagship super weapon; not employed at the battle of Hoth; nor at the crucial battle of Endor. Unless there are new special editions with ret-conned new troopers.
There was a similar problem with the PT, in that many years before Episode IV the starships looked more advanced, because their cinematic design cues were a couple of decades more recent.
As I see it, apart from the established characters, none of the new ones can be deemed classic until they're at least as old as ROTJ. By my reckoning that'll be 2047.
Yes, troopers for specific environments I guess is okay. I didn't know they were specifically armoured vehicle or tropical troops. But there were armoured vehicle drivers in ESB (AT-AT and AT-ST).
As for the first DS I see it guarded by the basic marine (the regular Stormtrooper). With no plans for going skiing or scouting they didn't add them to the roster.

Check out "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" costumes display at Star Wars Celebration 2016!
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or simply Rogue One, is an upcoming American epic space opera film and the first stand-alone Star Wars Anthology film, and the ninth theatrical feature film in the series. Set in the Star Wars universe shortly before the events of A New Hope, the story will center on a group of Rebel spies on a mission to steal the plans for the Galactic Empire's new weapon, the Death Star. Rogue One will be released on December 16, 2016.
Star Wars Celebration weekend is officially underway at the ExCeL London Exhibition Centre! The Rogue One costumes are on display at the massive fan event!
There will also be Shoretroopers. Specialist stormtroopers stationed at the top secret Imperial military headquarters, Shoretroopers patrol the beaches and bunkers of the planetary facility.
Costume belonging to Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones). Putting behind a checkered past by lending her skills to a greater cause, Jyn is impetuous, defiant, and eager to bring the battle to the Empire. Used to operating alone, she finds higher purpose by taking on a desperate mission for the Rebel Alliance.
Costume of Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna): An accomplished Rebel Alliance Intelligence Officer, with combat field experience, Captain Andor commands respect from his Rebel troops with his ability to keep a cool head under fire and complete his missions with minimal resources.
Costume belonging to Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook: A former Imperial pilot, Bodhi has strong piloting and technical skills that he will put to use for the Rebellion. Ever practical, but highly anxious, Rook must gather his courage to bring the battle to the Empire.

Thought this too. The catch that'll make it hard to skip are the cool green lights in their helmets. The death troopers have the rubber elbows like the TFA ones unfortunately. I think I can safely pass on all of these, but I'll see after the movie.

Tell me though, those who know better, what's wrong with the sandtrooper-esque guy's helmet? Maybe it's just me but something seems off and unlike the OT trooper helmet.
The RoTJ Stormtrooper helmets are just awful. Thanks for posting that, inked. I think from far away they look fine. I like the added vents on the side and the teeth/frown detail looks okay as well. For me they still look better than the ROTJ stormtroopers.
That would be nice.I hope Rogue One reveals the battle garment beneath the Royal Guards before HT decide to make the RotJ one.
"Death trooper" is not as bad as "Shore Trooper". If death troopers are the elite division like ARC troopers were to the clones, then it makes sense that they have specialized armor & equipment. Shore trooper though? Really? Should have them wading through the water instead of regular storm troopers. I really didn't like that shot. Felt like a Hawaiian fan film.
Bay Watch troopers.
Just waiting for a proto-Phasma to come running down the beach with her cuirass bouncing up and down provocatively!
