Star Ace has quickly become one of my favorite companies, thanks to their aggressive work on some key licenses in sixth scale. They released the first Harry Potter just 10 months ago, and now their fifth figure is already shipping - Mad Eye Moody! You can find my look at the figure here:

or with the rest of the reviews at the usual:

Thanks for reading!

Poor choice of materials on the clothing for a $200 figure. That glossy leather shirt and brown velvet coat make him look like he's modeling the latest fashions, rather than the aged, ragged wizard that he is.

Really looks like a missed opportunity to me, to show off some excellent weathering techniques. As it is, that kind of effort is not acceptable at $200. Looking back at the proto shots, it looked much better. They definitely deserve a star knocked off for not meeting the mark on the proto.

If Hot Toys is taking knocks for rushing out Star Wars, Star Ace definitely needs to slow down on Potter to make these look right.

damn. not so hot ...the coat is thee coolest thing he has! looks cheap. and the sculpt and neck look very dollish. oh well probably best. i cant take another line right now lol

I agree, poor choice color and material for coat. They should weather the coat just like proto

I agree with what is being said about the material choices. I also do not like the thin legs with the padded upper body, it doesn't make sense anatomically. I also don't like the leather flap under his chin. I think overall it looks pretty good, but it may be a pass for me.

Not loving this one.... I'm in the process of selling off all my Harry Potter Tonner dolls to move into this line instead, but Moody looks like a pass for me.

Whoa. Something definitely got lost in production. The coat color is way off and the paint on the head looks too dark (both skin and hair color).

The costume could use some weathering, granted. However this coat is weathered just as much as the prototype. If you're remembering differently it could because the pictures were darker of the proto.

And remember this is the actual Moody from OotP and not the fauxMoody from GoF. The GoF Moody was much rougher looking with deeper scars and a much more worn costume.

I'm sorry Michael had trouble with the leg - however it is not supposed to be removable. Don't know why his is coming off.

Michael-another great review!

I don't collect this line, or many of the ones that you review, but I look forward to each of your reviews (and guest reviews) and always enjoy them. There are a few cases of my being on a fence for a figure, and a great review (or a bad one, for that matter) can help me make a decision. Thanks!

Thanks for the review Michael!

I was super excited for this figure, but now I'm a quite disappointed. What happened to his eye? The proto looked great, but in the review it looks awful.

Debating canceling my preorder.

I just did something I NEVER do. In fact, in almost 4000 reviews, I've done it so few times you could probably count them on one hand. I revised the review after publishing, all because of that damn left eye. I didn't notice how weird the iris and pupil looked, but once I saw it I couldn't unsee it. I think the white color is fine, and I don't think the prototype tinged color made any sense (it should be a clean white), but once I saw the weird pinwheel look, it drove me nuts. So I pulled the paint score down, which pulled the overall down.

I still really like the figure, and I don't agree on the weathering of the costume issue (it's no different here than the prototype), but that eyeball is bugging me now...

I'd have to disagree with that... the prototype was more weathered than this. Not extreme, but nice subtle weathering that looked quite realistic as opposed to this very doll-like clothing:

You can even see some clear variations of color on the lapels either from sanding or maybe paint... opposed to this:

I still think he looks cool, but the costume is in dire need of weathering. The proto pics are certainly different.
