I saw Star Wars in its 2nd week of opening at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

For me... Yep!

My grandfather took me, let me "ditch" the day of school to avoid the ever-increasing lines. I'll never forget that whole day.

Most impressive!

I would be enthralled to read others’ recounts of their experiences watching the OT back in the day!

My parents, their friends and my sisters had already seen it; I can't remember now if it was '77 or '78 only because I can't find the date(s) it released in Canada ... anyway, I was either four or five ... my mother got a phone call, hung up the receiver and said "Your father's coming and we're taking you to see Star Wars."

I was a timid little kid (wow did that ever change) -- and was a little anxious about what I called 'the noisy parts' and remember looking out the car window from the backseat literally thinking 'no turning back now' -- I think when very young I'd been freaked out by a very loud action/disaster sequence in a theatre at some point ... a flood or something -- anyway ...

... the film started and ended. My parents asked me if the 'noisy parts' scared me. Me, wide-eyed and stunned:

"I LIKED the noisy parts!!"

My mother made sure I got all the toys. My dad had me assist him in building model kits of the X-Wing and C3PO. The neighbourhood kids and I would blast the soundtrack on vinyl while having epic battles with the Death Star play set. It was good times.

*EDIT: I also distinctly remember some tough looking (to my wee eyes) 'big kids' clowning around in the theatre lobby, yelling "Take me to your leader!" in front of the poster of the sandtrooper mounted on the dewback.

My parents were immigrants in NY, still somewhat trying to assimilate our family, my first contribution towards that end, (I was about 11) was - lets go see this movie.
My parents baffled, didn't quite know what to make of it all, yet to me, the anticipation, the line and crowds around the block, inside we got a program (I kept and pondered over for the next year), and the absolutely mind blowing, thrilling and uplifting movie, to me, this was America.

I read the novelization, Marvel comics, collected bubblegum cards and stickers, and got (still do) a couple of the figures. Couldn't afford any ships or sets, yet improvisation went a long way.
Three years later, me and my friends cut school to get on line to see Empire, and hid in the theater, to see it over, and over again, till we came out it was night.

I wasn't born until 1979, so ROTJ was my SW childhood movie (ESB as an adult) as that's the one I remember all the hype for. I never saw any at the theater, alas.

We had all three on VHS as a kid, but ROTJ was my favourite. As I got older, ESB became my favourite.

When the special editions came out at the cinema in 1997 or 1998, my friends watched them all in one day - it was a fantastic experience. Alas, it all went downhill from there, starting with TPM in 1999 which I unfortunately went to the midnight premier.

My parents were beginning to slowly rejoin regular society and leave Evangelical Christian Extremism behind. Which, I cannot tell you how much of a relief this was, since it basically ruined mine and my brother's childhoods. Anyhoo, my dad wanted to see Star Wars so it was decided that JUST THIS ONCE we were going to break down and see this movie. This was HUUUUUGE, a -huge- concession from them because Hollywood and everything in it was eeeeee-vil. They really didnt want us watching Star Trek on tv even, except my dad liked that too so....

So we all loaded up and went to the drive-in and saw Star Wars. We had such a good time that this helped relax things further and sort of allow me and my brother to be actual human beings, among other things. My family was something. Trust me. Thank you to SW! We saw SW several more times before it left the theatre. My brother and I collected all the merch we could get our hands on. Read all the books. It was like getting out of jail.

[public service announcement: Extremism always, always breeds its opposite, never one time in human history has this not been true. Beware.]

A long time ago, ....Lucas with Frank Frazetta and wife. (that sweater belongs in a museum)

Though it's not on model, I love the classic 1977 Frazetta inspired Tom Jung poster, as it references that eras greatest sci-fantasy visual artist whose style was the clear inspiration.
Lucas was a tremendous fan of Frazetta (who previously had a classic run on Buck Rogers comic *)

...and become the preeminent sci-fantasy illustrator of the time, hence Lucas sought him out to do artwork, yet Frazetta being a frugal protector of his art (understandably so), insisted on holding rights to all original art. Yet Lucas was equally protective of his own, so they could not come to an agreement.

Enter Tom Jung to at first refrance Frazetta's hyper masculine and femninine sci-fantasy style, yet progressively toned down to be more on model, and the eventual poster we got.

(*also if pondering the inspiration for Leia's Hutt-Slayer outfit, again Frazetta^ after his John Carter & Princess of Mars illustrations)

A pretty standard take on Dejah Thoris look by then, (Dave Cockrum bellow) illustrating the 77 series...
