By 1980 Star Wars was already a huge cultural phenomena and made a lot of people a lot of money yet as soon as ESB started filming they quickly fell behind schedule because of the Norway snow storms and the banks immediately threatened Lucas and Fox to cut the funding even with ANH making all that money.

Today…

They throw 300+ million at Joker 2 and at a ton of other 300 + million abysmally bad productions with little care or thought.

Yet even with ANH being huge they immediately busted balls.

Disney had a good quarter. They want to keep it up. Nothing tanks 'goodwill' like doubling-down with a new Rey-driven Star Wars trilogy.

Honestly, Disney would be better off going to series with Rey, so they can develop this under-developed character before putting her in the narrative shorthand of a motion picture again.
