Peter Mayhew had some operations to improve his mobility a few months ago, his wife reported that he hoped he'd have recovered in time to be able to play Chewie. I guess he's still on target when he was announced a few days ago, looks like from the pic he's going to be able only to play his characters death bed scene.
Looking at these pictures it certainly changes a few peoples views, Harrison and Carrie look great, Mark still has to shape up a bit and poor old Peter Mayhew is in a wheelchair. Hopefully the latter pair will be fully fit by the time they start filming in a few weeks.

No amount of CGI can capture the way Peter moved as Chewie, it was an art form in itself and on par with Hall's performance as the Predator.
Maybe Chewbacca will be CGI and they will have him wearing the mocap suit

Agreed though. Mayhew's stance, posture, mannerisms - all of that, are an integral part of Chewie as a living, breathing character.
A more related parallel, would be Anthony Daniels & C-3PO.

Daniels movements are dictated by the suit, the way Mayhew moves are down to him and the way he interpreted the character. The same as the way Kevin Peter Hall with his mime background interpreted the character and movements of the Predator. Anyone could play 3PO but its the voice that makes Daniels performance distinctive, as we've seen no one has been able to portray the Predator anyway as good as Hall. And i doubt anyone would be able to play Chewie as good as Mayhew, whether thats another actor or by CGI.

Glad Mayhew is back and the knee replacement seems to have worked. I would really hate to see a CGI Chewie... I'd take a replacement actor under the suit before CGI.

It's not just what you said - it's exactly as I said, Daniels' posture, mannerisms etc are all traits that are characteristic of HIM. The suit is restrictive yes, but it's what he brought. Not much to argue there really.

The only unique mannerism in 6 films is the timing of when 3PO turns his head, indicating various emotions usually such as suprise. His posture and his shuffling walk comes from the suit, everything else is through his dialogue. That is why when Chris Parsons played 3PO in some scenes of the OT no one knew until Lucasfilm let it be known....

Chris Parsons, huh.. yes I know what you're getting at. He didn't do any real acting on Daniel's behalf though - he was purely a dummy in the suit for 2nd unit / stand in stuff etc.

Also, you are far from the first person to ask me about Chris Parsons and his comments, so thank you for giving me the opportunity to shed light on the subject for you and for many others. To the best of my recollection, Chris Parsons was one of the large group of background artists who usefully dressed up in various costumes on ESB and ROJ. On some occasions in ROJ he was asked to be a stand-in for me; to stand on my marks whilst they lit the scene and I got dressed in the gold suit for the shot. Over the first three movies I enjoyed the assistance of Harriet and most particularly, Alan, as stand-ins, both of whom were also a great help and very much a part of my support team. As far as stunts go, the first fall was performed by Jo from the props department; the second by me and the third by Tracy. Stunt people are brave and talented people who should be respected for their particular skill. I believe that Chris Parsons wore the costume for the long shot of Threepio being carried towards the Ewok village. I remember this was a second unit shot filmed in the UK whilst I was filming with the main unit in America, in Yuma and in the redwoods, with lots of rather fresher Ewoks. Whilst the shot was very necessary and the use of second unit speeds up the production process, wearing a suit is possibly not quite the same as 'playing a role'. To my knowledge this was the whole of Chris Parsons' contribution as C-3PO on camera and he was never, as some people have been led to believe, involved as a stunt performer on my behalf. Nor did he act as personal assistant to me, as had Harriet, Maxi, Alan, John and Brian. Whereas he provided a very useful resource for the second unit and wore several different costumes, I'm sure that Chris Parsons' comments regarding his involvement with C-3PO and myself have been hugely misinterpreted by fans, since I believe he would never have intended to deliberately and unprofessionally exaggerate his contribution to the filming process and take credit from those who actually did do the work."

I really would take what Anthony Daniels says with a pinch of salt, try finding out what Kenny Baker feels about Daniels and his own hugely inflated opinion of himself or what Baker would do to him if he was ever in the same room as Daniels.
Who played 3PO in Phantom Menace? If you listen to Daniels it was purely him yet everyone who knows anything about SW knows it was a puppet performed by Michael Lynch and Daniels only provided his voice. My information didn't come from Parsons but from statements in various making of books that have been published over the years.
