When operational nothing beats the lethality that it puts out so why not keep building them?

First one was taken out with the force only, the Empire didn't see that ever happening.

Second one wasn't enclosed due to the emporers arrogance.

Maybe this time it will be fully enclosed and reenforced against pesky Jedi.

That's like saying the Jaegers in Pacific Rim were the best option which is nonsense They look great in a movie, as did the Deathstar. But in reality they make little sense. Given the immense size of the Deathstar, and the resources used for it's construction, a better alternative would be a huge fleet of heavily armed ships. They would be a harder target to hit given their numbers and combined would have no problem making a statement through firepower.

We have no idea what that is, but I do hope it is something new.

Not to apply too many "real world" concepts to the Star Wars universe, but given the level of science/technology exhibited in those films, it seems reasonable that, at least, advanced chemical and biological weapons (if not nuclear weapons) would have been developed at this point. And if you have no scruples as to the carnage and suffering that you are inflicting, that would certainly be a more efficient means of deterring, punishing, and subjugating than spending the equivalent of probably trillions of dollars on a moon sized gun! Apart from being incredibly inefficient, it's a pretty damn blunt instrument. You can only do a single thing with it, you can't target select cities, sub-populations, or bases, etc. And once you blow the planet up, you can't exploit that planet for resources, use the population as slave labor, etc. Plus, unless you could somehow move the moon around (and I don't know if they ever discussed this in the film), then you would be restricted to targeting only those planets in a direct line of sight, unless you blew up all the objects in-between in the process of blowing up the target. That would really limit your strategic options.
