Star Wars vs Star Trek: I've just traded allegiance.

What's a Trekkis? 
On topic though, I really do wish Lucas would lighten his grip on the SW universe and just allow other stories to be told by other directors. He could still be the overseer, just have final approval of storylines or changes to the universe. But the cinematic world would be so much richer if he would just allow this to happen.
To take SW with him to his death seems kinda selfish. It's grown larger than he is, it's not just a little story he made up anymore. Now it's a full fledged universe, that other writers play around in books and comics, etc... It's a travesty to imagine there never ever being any more films, even if they have absolutely nothing to do with the Skywalker family.

Why does it always seem to be the Star Wars fans who find it necessary to claim things like that?
I have not understood this ST vs. SW argument. Only thing they really have in common is space travel and a huge following.
I've never been keen on Star Trek, but my other half loves it. After being put through countless episodes I have warmed to it a little.
Star Wars has always been my Love. I do admit after seeing Clone Wars I did say to a friend that ‘I thought I would never say this, but I'm beginning to hate Star Wars‘. I just hate the direction it's going. From now on I'm only stick the 6 movies and ignore the rest.

I think you need to watch the opening space battle of ROTS again.
That's exactly what the upcoming live action series is all about.
That said, while Lucas has his issues and the PT is lacking... imho, the Expanded Universe is even worse. The less of that, the better. Only the KOTOR games and Luceno novels rise above.

Here is the thing though, if the live action series is fantastic with all other writers putting their spin on small arcs and the fans love it how crushing would that be if then Lucas passes and it has to be stopped without any chance of revival? If Lucas takes it to the grave, the day of his passing (which in reality could come at any time) would crush the machine. Nostalga only brings you so far, the Star Trek fans are prime examples of this since while their love remained strong, no licensees would really touch it save a small handful. Star Wars no matter how thin spread would start to follow that trend over time.
Saw Star Trek yesterday and it was pretty damn good didn't turn me into a trekkie but makes me wish GL would have had the prequels produced by Kurtz instead of McCallum IMO he would have fought Lucas on a lot of the story.

Agreed but said writer/director dismissed the original producer after Empire for disagreeing with his script decisions and hired yes men...Big mistake.
I can't imagine any movie franchise being better, to me, than the original Star Wars films. But in terms of contemporary Star Wars (prequels, cartoons) vs. the new Trek movie, there is no contest for me. I won't even bother to watch any new Star Wars media anymore, but after years of disappointments following TNG, JJ's Star Trek has made a believer out of me.

I think it's important to remember, though, that the Star Trek movies have pretty much always been secondary to the TV series. With Star Wars (unless you include stuff like the Droids and Ewoks cartoons, etc.) the movies were pretty much it. That is changing now with Clone Wars and the upcoming live-action show, of course.
