I am watching Buffy right now, the Episode where Angel loses his soul and reverts back to Angelus.

It got me thinking about stupid movie and TV curses that dont really work in the long run.

So the idea was that if Angel forgets the memories of his past sins for a moment he loses his soul, my thought is what the hell? i mean he loses his soul and reverts straight back to a killing machine, so all the Evil he does after this is totally the fault of the Gypsy cursers, why not make him die forever or not ever be free of the evil memories, why have the option of the curse breaking?

Same thing happened in The Mummy, a mortal man is cursed and buried alive for adultery with the Pharoahs woman, and the curse states that if he awakens, thanks to carefully placed ways, he will arise an IMMORTAL with power over the sands and would be unstoppable, again what the hell? Why not leave him dead or failing that let him arise a regular bloke.

What kind of punishment is found in giving them power?

I'm probably overthinking this, and i know its only entertainment, but it Irks me how stupid these 'supposed' curse are.

The entire point is that he will always feel guilt over what he has done, and in that guilt be compelled to keep his soul by never forgetting. Essentially trapped in a giant cycle of having to be eternally sorry.

But once the soul is gone, Angelus doesnt care its like he has been set free and allowed to go on a rampage, if they want him to suffer why allow the curse to be broken?

Angelus was cursed by the clan of gypsies as punishment for killing the daughter of an elder. This punishment was carried out via the 'Ritual of Restoration', which returned a soul back to Angelus. The thought was by returning it, his conscience would follow and with that, so would all of the guilt for the murders and pain he had caused over the last hundred plus years with his sire and companion, Darla. Him being a vampire and in essence immortal, this punishment would not only last a human lifetime, but theoretically, for the aforementioned eternity. Now with a hundred years of guilt on his shoulders, the new 'Angel' was outcasted by Darla for his newly-formed sense of humanity, and so began his road back to redemption (and ultimately the opportunity to become human once more, as foretold by the Shanshu Prophecy.)

Upon the arrival of the Slayer in Sunnydale, Angel and Buffy would inevitably fall in love and on that fateful night during "Surprise" in Season 2, we found out that the Kalderash curse had a 'catch,' unbeknownst to Buffy and even Angel:

Should Angel experience a moment of TRUE happiness, he would lose his soul, breaking the curse, reverting back to his old ways as his former vampire self.

Why allow the curse to be broken? The thought was Angel's soul would never allow him to feel a moment of true happiness. The burden of guilt would be far too great (and thought to be a much more fitting form of punishment than death, at the time the original curse was placed.) Of course, in this case and during that moment, he forgot all about his sins. His conscience allowed himself to experience that moment. And this time, it was Angel who be punished by losing his soul once more.

Once Angel was 'resurrected' from Hell in Season 3 (now with a 'newly-improved' soul and way of life,) we saw things between Buffy and him were no longer the same. Angel began to realize that the one true thing he wanted more in this life (Buffy), he could never be his because of his curse. Now knowing these limitations, Angel could never bring himself to love her, nor another, in that way ever again.

And so the 'gift' of a soul, in this case, was a far greater punishment than I think even the gypsies, who cursed him centuries ago, could have ever imagined. Not only did the curse affect Angelus, but ultimately, Angel as well.

The Hot Chick.

Stupid _____ steals a stupid pair of earrings which has a stupid curse that does the whole "Switch Body thing".

Horrible movie.

Does the body-swap movie cliche count? I'm just really tired of those flicks. They keep getting made; the newest one is the Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman comedy.

I kinda mentioned that. But yes it counts.

I'm hoping that flick could be alright...it's r-rated humor in that situation. So that'll seperate it from the other flicks.

You're really not talking about specific curses - you're talking about the concept itself. Curses by their nature can be broken, and the point is usually that they are broken by the cursed finding some sort of redemption or epiphany.

In Angel's case, it is quite a cool situation. He's 'cursed' because he was happy killing as a vampire. Having the soul and feeling the guilt was the curse. His 'redemption' was to feel true happiness, and then the curse would be broken and he'd get to go back to his old self. It's interesting because in this case his old self, the one you'd assume he'd want back, is Angelus, the bad guy. When he does get it back, he finds that's not what he wants - he prefers being cursed. Cool stuff.

i thought this was gonna be a thread about movies' foul language being replaced with tv friendly language. ya know, like die hard 2...
