I thought the indents were for ease of opening the hatches which in itself would be totally stupid. I mean the Taito clock have those, but it's a $25 clock. But if it's for hinges that's not much better. Maybe it's possible to look pass it if it remains on the released figure, like the big pistons on 3PO.

I like the tubing for Kenny Baker's feet in standing mode but that's about it.

I did the alcohol swab on r2 and the first pass nearly took all of the grime off. I ended up cleaning most of it off and some of his upper body as well. Might clean him off completely. Still debating...

I wanted to like this and I wanted to buy this to go with 3PO. I would even have stood for the $300 price. But hinges, rivets, and a plastic dome have doomed this for me. I hope hot toys comes through with that fancy metal dome!

Yeah, grrr... I think I agree with you.

The rivets are definitely an odd choice - theyre just barely visible maybe 5% of the time onscreen.

And what is it with companies and these freakin' panels? WE DON'T NEED FUNCTIONAL PANELS! I'm guessing maybe one out of a hundred collectors would display R2 with panels/arms open/out.

That's the main reason for me in considering this one as well.

It seems like adding those tubes wouldn't be a huge mod for any of the other R2's - just finding the right scaled tubing and some very careful cutting.

This x1000. I think even the Hot Toys R2 doesn't look to have very clean panels, probably because it was created to have panels that open in the future.

Here, it looks like there might be tiny rivets, where the dirt has settled in. But this is the only scene you can see it in

After the shape had been decided upon, the SFX wizards had to find a way to make R2-D2 move and behave like the director would want. This task was divided between Lucasfilm in California, who did the blueprints, and the local studio shop at the EMI/Elstree Studios in London, England. There, a company named Norank did build six Artoo units, and since at that time a lot of people from the aerospace industrie were working there, these R2 were mostly built of aluminum, including the legs. You can see this prototype in the picture out of the "Art of-book" at the top of this page, recognizable from the rivets in his upper body. The man behind this first incarnation of Artoo-Deetoo was John Stears, the mechanical effects supervisor for StarWars.

Not sure if this has been posted or already talked about but i thought i would toss it on here anyway. i guess they decided to go with the proto look for this R2

This makes sense. I think they probably used an early proto in one of the scenes.
Later on, they stuck with the later models.

I googled high res pics of r2 and clearly, almost all do not have rivets.
That's why I'm shocked and thought the rivets on this figure is purely artistic interpretation.

But yup, those are rivets alright.

Their Threepio is a class product.

Their Artoo looks more inaccurate than Sideshow's, with what looks like cutouts for the hinges, for example.

With luck the HT will look something more like this:

Look hard enough, those rivets are there too. In exactly the same places too. Maybe he comes with poly caps like most Japanese toys do....

So it's a plastic dome?

Btw, I always display him with open panels!

Maybe but I think it's scale tbh. I'm hoping for the metal dome, but it's not enough to push me over to the HT version...yet. Since I will end up with both the SS and Tamashii droids, I'll have, I believe, all the die cast, lights and sound I'll need. However, I'm one of the easiest Star Wars marks out there for new figures, so can't say never....

Yeah I would think so, not sure if it'll be released in Japan long before, but that's a consideration also of course.

EMS was one of the more expensive shipping items so it could be close to a $40 savings with a cheaper option. I should clarify that I didn't order it, just meant I checked prices to my location, etc.

I haven't ordered from there before, some of the online reviews aren't great. I'm going with amiami, HLJ are good too, though I've never had to negotiate a return with either of them.
