Hi guys, kind of new to the forum (lots of really cool stuff here) but anyway, I know a guy with a machine shop this is always looking for new things to build and I had an ideal. I was going to tray and make a working Terminator Endoskeleton hand (and maybe the hole arm) completely out of steel! has anyone ever don or trayed to do this? my plan was to buy the resin arm from e-bay and then make all the parts out of steel. if all goes well, I may have him keep making them and put them up on e-bay.
what do you guys think? can it be done? shood it be done? what do you think something like this would sell for? thanks for the replays.

Welcome. It can be done, but i'm sure it won't be easy. I know people have made Terminators, Aliens & Predators using 100% metal. The results are impressive, but they're not the most accurate depictions of the characters.

Here's an example of what I am talking about:

I'm not certain how much your project would fetch on ebay, i would imagine it would bring in far less than the actual licensed Terminator arm.

the way I am thinking of making it, it would be about 90-95% the same as the licensed Terminator arm. (BTW what kind of league problems, if any, could I get into with this) the cool thing about the one I am going to make is that every part will move, just how it shod. it is going to be just like the one that the t-800 shows to Miles Dyson in T2, so you could use it to hold thing like a bear can, bass ball, bass ball bat, hand gun ext. just about anything you could hold with a real hand you could make this one hold. also I am thinking of running bike cables in the fingers so maybe they could be make to puppet the fingers to make the hand open and close remotely.

P.S. there is one on ebay made out of steel nuts and bolts and stuff all welded tougher. that is Not what I am thinking of making.

The reason it wouldn't get as much as the official one is because, it isn't official, even if it CAN move or be posed.

I am kind of new to this hole world, but what you just told me gos right over my head. we are talking about two different things here. the official one is a resin kit (unless you are talking about something else) and what I am making is a hand made steal working hand, so I don't see how a plastic kit is going to sell for more that what I am going to make.
I am going to build it as close to the one in the movie as I can. I want to be like a it just came off the cybetdyne assembly line. it is going to be more real than any "official" plastic prop could ever be.

It's a collector thing. It's the same reason why a collector would want a Hot Toys endoskeleton over an Aoshima endoskeleton - sure, the aoshima is made of metal but people want the more collectible item (the HT version).

Collectors will want the officially licenced/highly collectible thing as opposed to a fan-made something else.

If done correctly OFFICIAL or not it could fetch WAY more than the SIDESHOW version.

Exactly. Just look at the superb Russ Replicas CPU chip and flask made of solid aluminum with glass tube. A licensed thing like this would be most highly be made of resin. Also try and compare the hilarious chocolate chip that comes with the SS Endoskull bust, with the cool brass one (also) made by Russ. I really hope Russ will make one day a full Endo arm of aluminum with movable fingers etc. On the other hand, for example in the Star Wars collecting world there are fan made props that are more accurate and also more sought for (and expensive) than any licensed product.

Yes, I completely disagree with the statement that it would sell for less. I'm not interested in the Sideshow replica. Why? It is long sold out and priced way above what it should be for the quality.

I would LOVE an actual metal arm, cool to the touch, with poseable fingers like we saw in the movie. I have no interest for plastic, resin, or static props of that item.

There is a sizeable market, for sure, if you get this done. Not sure of the price. That would depend on how much it cost you to make it, plus a little mark up or whatever you add to make it worth your time. But yeah, i'm sure someone would buy it. If it was reasonable, i'd love one some day.

If you are not a member of the RPF, try joining them in the future. There are people on there all the time talking about this, and I just read someone begging Russrep today to make a working metal arm!

If you make it, looks good, and have a qaulity product. You will have plenty of interest.
