I disagree, it is necessary - knowing about Ripley's loss of her daughter obviously made her see Newt as a "replacement" and gives more substance to her connection with her. This comes full-circle when Newt calls Ripley, "mommy" after she blows the Queen outta the airlock.
Obviously we know in the SE Ripley lost her daughter and Newt lost her mom - it was natural for the two of them to connect. This connection was a LARGE part of their relationship and bonding - it was their commonality.
I see what you mean but I think while that scene does add to Ripley's character, it STILL comes through the movie even with the scene cut and slows down the pace of the movie, which at that point, is getting us back to LV-426.
