Marvel Talks About The Future
by Jay Cochran in Marvel at 01:27 AM on 2008.09.11

David Maisel, Executive Vice-President, Office of the Chief Executive, and Chairman of Marvel Studios, spoke at the 2008 Merrill Lynch Media Fall Preview today about Marvel’s transformative year. This year saw the launch of an independent movie studio, beginning with blockbuster Iron Man, the 21st biggest movie of all time. The movie’s $318 million domestic gross was simply a building block towards the $575 million gross worldwide – with Japan still to open on Sept 27. The Incredible Hulk was another winning title with $216 million in worldwide revenue and $135 million domestic gross. The Incredible Hulk has opened in Japan and China; it is the largest movie distributed by Universal in China to date.

Marvel will continue its focus on Iron Man with a sequel scheduled for release April 30, 2010. Maisel also mentioned a third Iron Man film but did not provide a release date. Continuing the build-up to the year of the Avengers is Thor, set for release in June 2010. Marvel hopes to capture the excitement that surrounded the Lord of the Rings trilogy with its focus on Thor, a Norse god struggling with his half-brother and father. The movie features significant and interesting character development juxtaposing Thor’s deity and his human personality.

Captain America will have his turn at the silver screen in early May 2011. The movie’s working title is the First Avenger: Captain America, capturing Cap’s place as the leader and founding member of the all-star Avengers. The team of Captain America, Iron Man, and Thor will come together in Avengers, scheduled for release in July 2011. Marvel will continue to inter-connect the movies with cameo appearances of the Avengers characters, similar to Tony Stark’s appearance at the end of Incredible Hulk. Marvel’s vision of the Avengers’ movies mirrors the Star Wars saga where characters are fundamentally connected and story lines lead from one movie to the next.

Marvel’s introduction as a movie studio moves in parallel with the company’s continued force as the fifth largest licensing company in the world based on retail sales. The company negotiated a profitable licensing deal for toys with Hasbro, and Maisal announced new video games based on Captain America and Thor to be released by Sega. Marvel’s licensing extends into the world of theme parks with a multi-billion dollar deal for a park in Dubai, set to open in 2012, and two more parks in South Korea. These parks present no financial risk for Marvel while the company retains significant creative control and economic participation.

Even with the furor surrounding Marvel’s movie, toy, and video games, the company has not forgotten its core; it is poised to take advantage of the interactive potential for comics as they move to the Internet, cellular phones, and iPhones. Marvel plans to continue efforts to digitize a 70-year library of comics and hopes to deliver these titles to an entirely new audience around the world.

What is Marvel going to do about aging actors? I mean it's not like they can keep putting out Ironman movies every 2-3 years before the actor just gets too old. In comics, the character stays young forever, just like on the Simpsons. But I wonder what the reaction will be in a decade when they have to replce RDJ with someone else.

I think it depends on who they eventually replace him with. Look at the Batman franchise. Alot of people liked Michael Keaton in the role back in 1989but just as many accepted Christian Bale when he took over for Batman Begins (we won't talk about Kilmer or Clooney:D).

I think the initial reaction will be hatred, as it always is on the net when something changes, but then depending how good the actor is when the movie comes out, I think most fans will accept them in the role. These franchises should out live most actors playing the roles.

I know who are the good guys... But what about the bad guys? The villians? Which characters will be coming out? They are the one who will make the good guys look like heros...
Pls don't forget about them. =P

Yeah you're right my head is not screwed on tonight.

Sony has a 6 picture dealio

yep and with the announcement of pics 4 and 5 only one more left. though they will take forever to get that one out, just so it won't get back to marvel.

could you imagine how much better the avenger movies would do at the box office if spidey was in the mix.

yeah i hear ya, but with so many villians for each super hero and with endless possiblities for crossovers (avengers and hopefully spidey vs hulk) these franchises will last for a very long time.
we all know how killed of characters always manage to find away to reinvent themselves.

In 10 years there will be a new batch of teenagers (the ones who buy lots of tickets to the movies) who've never heard of RDJ.

2 parks in South Korea?

Why not just 1?

And where's the US park? Sounds like Marvel has forgotten its roots...

Marvel has a deal with Universal to have their characters used in their parks, which is why they are not persuing their own parks stateside.

Marvel Studios and Paramount Distribution Deal
Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios today announced an agreement under which Paramount will distribute Marvel's next five self-produced feature films on a worldwide basis. The deal, an extension of the original agreement made by Brad Grey when he arrived as CEO and Chairman of Paramount Pictures, includes theatrical distribution in foreign territories previously serviced by Marvel through local distribution entities (Japan, Germany, France, Spain and Australia/New Zealand). The distribution pact capitalizes on Marvel and Paramount's successful efforts with Iron Man, which has grossed $574 million worldwide for Marvel.

The highly anticipated live action releases include Iron Man 2 (May 7, 2010), Thor (July 16, 2010), The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011), and The Avengers (July 15, 2011). The distribution agreement also includes Iron Man 3.

"Coming off of 'Iron Man's' incredible success this summer, we could not be more excited about extending our relationship with Marvel," said Rob Moore, Vice Chairman of Paramount Pictures. "Marvel's iconic brand, its popular characters and its proven ability to create compelling and visually spellbinding films complement Paramount's great history of filmmaking. We look forward to a long and successful run together."

"Paramount is an excellent partner and an outstanding global distributor," said David Maisel, Chairman of Marvel Studios. "Through our experience on 'Iron Man,' Paramount has demonstrated a passion and ability to release Marvel properties theatrically, allowing us to focus on making great movies for the largest audience possible."

Marvel's Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Jon Favreau, was distributed by Paramount earlier this year and was one of the top films of 2008. The DVD, including a version in Blu-ray, will be released on September 30, 2008.

Marvel Superhero Island at Islands of Adventure just isn't enough. We need a full park devoted to the them.

I was in one of those Disney outlet stores last weekend and figured it will probably be filled with Marvel stuff next year! I buy more than statues!
