PJ says he won't direct The Hobbit because he is doing the The Lovely Bones and TinTin...

I suspect thats the PC way of saying "Newline have agreed that I should be involved but they don't want to back down 100% so we've come up with this compromise..." Could just be me being cynical but I think PJ would love to direct and NL won't let him because of the previous "disagreements"...

I think that whoever the director is, it won't matter how since they'll just be PJ's ******. :rock

That being said, I wouldn't blame him if he doesn't want to direct. He just about killed himself with his work load on the LOTR films.

I'm hoping that PJ will still write and direct... but I AM grateful that at least he is vitally involved in the process, so we can look forward to Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, hopefully Howard Shore, Weta Workshop, Howe and Lee designs etc. Lovely Bones I found very disappointing, the first 2/3 were good and it felll apart for me at the last 1/3. And the only reason I read it because PJ was making it. Ugghh. And TinTin could go either way, does anybody in North America even really know these characters. To me it was always a French/European thing.

Hey if Bryan Singer could jump ship on X-Men 3 to do Superman Returns... :monkey3

I think I would wait an extra year or two if it meant PJ was writing and directing...

That doesn't really make sense, it's better for New Line if PJ writes and directs because that is what the absolute majority of fans want. So it wouldn't be in their FINANCIAL interest to prevent PJ from directing.

Is TinTin really a movie based on that british kid and the dog? Why?

tintin is Belgian. And for one, I am very happy that someone of PJ's caliber is involved because previous Tintin movies have not been very good.

As for the hobbit, well, people waited 50+ years for LOTR, I dont mind waiting a few more years. I am sure PJ doesn't want to be only known as the lotr director and nothing else.

Thrilled as I am with PJ's involvement in The Hobbit, I'm just praying that his overcrowded schedule doesn't knock the development of the rights he purchased for "Temeraire" off his radar. I'm really looking forward to his bringing that story to the big screen, more so than Lovely Bones (which I know nothing about) or TinTin (which I also know absolutely nothing about.)

money wise, yes, since lucas created star wars and are able to profit from it, but PJ didn't create LOTR. he's just a director that brought an existing material to the movie format.

Right you are my good fellow!

But with the WETA merchandising side......That could also be precious, PJ's precious!

Comparing Lucas' merchandising revenue from Star Wars to Jackson's take from Weta would be like comparing the income of average cab driver in New York to Donald Trump. And that's not meant as a slam on Jackson. It's just that EVERY dollar spent on a Star Wars product means a cut goes to Lucas, no matter who the manufacturer is or what type of product it is. Jackson will see some income from Weta collectibles, but those will only be a small percentage of the overall LOTR/Hobbit merchandise, most of which won't generate any income for him at all.

I never said that it would make "financial" sense, just that as part of their settlement (ie them being pig-headed about it) they didn't want to completely surrender to Jackson and let him direct, hence the PC suggestion. Politics doesn't always (ever?!) make financial sense, it was just a get-out for NL to let PJ back in to be involved in the Hobbit, whilst NL would still save some face. That being said, as can be seen from the reaction here, any kind of involvement from PJ is generally seen as positive, so I don't think the financial implications are that great - if PJ is involved (and the actors, Weta etc), most of the people that loved the LotR films will be happy so the Hobbit films (at least the first one) will do very well at the box office come what may...

The Lonely Bones are on it's way, and I don't think he'll cancel that one for whatever project. But Tintin could be delayed. There is no rush to do Temeraire either...
