The Lone Ranger movie

For those with kids who have seen this, what are your thoughts on a 5 and 7 year old seeing this? My two boys really want to see this, but I want to know what I can expect before I let them watch it or not.

There are a few parts that are a little dark, but, for the most part, I'd say it's no darker than PoTC. The thing that comes to mind for me as the most alarming would probably be the scene in which it's alluded to that Cavendish...

There's a lot of bullet holes making penetration too. It's a dark movie and in this they are people. There's a whole dark segment about what happened to some Indians. Whereas in Pirates, it was CGI ghosts and ghouls and looked more fantastical; this looks more real. Definitely not the old Lone Ranger.

Very true, but I'd say, as a movie, it's pretty much at the level Raiders was with the Ark of the Covenant scene, in terms of content. At its core, it's an adventure film with some dark moments.

Don't have to have kids to alert you that this is a rather brutal film for its rating and Disney producing it. When grown adults kind of say, "did I just see that," you know it might be a little questionably for young kids.

Thanks guys! My kids have seen all the Indiana Jones movies, as well as some other ones my wife has shook her head at me for. Me and my wife are good at watching with them to talk to them about whats happening if they have questions and what not. I may give it a watch first to make sure.

Agreed. It was an enjoyable entertaining film

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm sure I'll check it out....after all if you're a Ranger fan from old, then you kinda have to right?

Same exact thing happened with John Carter. Really good movie, Nice action scenes, pretty cool sci fi story. Completely trashed, I never got why

I Hope I like it better then John Carter.


I never trust QT and his taste in movies... He seems to enjoy crappy ones as much as good ones.

Having said all that my expectations are low so I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

I got this film for Christmas and watched it straight away... I really enjoyed it, Tonto was awesome!

Well The Lone Rangers uniform was not originally blue and white either. For christmas I got my dad a comic of Lone ranger from 1938. He had pretty nornal clothing on the cover. I onow clayton more is the definitive look though. If ever ssc made a pf of that my dad would squeal.

I pretty much hated it. Well hate is a strong word. But I found the film very frustrating.

First off I enjoyed the first 45 min. the first Train scene in the beginning was a pretty classic western style scene. Lots of real stunts save for the big train crash and the Swinging around the train scene.

The Ambush scene was done well and for the most part I liked Depp. Actually I thought he was the best part, which I thought he would be the worst part (I am not a Depp fan like so many others)

But then they had to go and make the Lone Ranger such a goofy and feminine man... I get the whole, he's a lawyer and wants justice and yada yada but when his brother is killed and mutilated, and the woman he loves is taken, I was hoping he would get to be a little more Bad ***, and not the screaming, flailing armed (this is a bank robbery, I come from the spirit world) goofy, worthless nothing that he pretty much was. When the William Tell overture finally hit I could not even get excited because they had ruined his character so much. I did not feel like the Lone Ranger was on his way but some wanna be who was not that good at it.

Now I was a fan of the old show and I even like the movie from way back, though I have read it's awful so I am sure my childhood memories are being kind, but this was not the Lone Ranger. It was some Goofy actor trying to act kinda like Jack Sparrow but not as cool and Tonto acting a lot like Jack Sparrow but that was to be expected.

I know it was supposed to be a comedy also but it just went to far with the Lone Ranger character. I was so happy when Tonto finally called him a White Coward because I was bursting with rage and frustration by this time.

The final Action scene was too over the top also. I guess I should have expected this being the crew who made POTC but after the first scene in the beginning I thought there would be more realistic and practical effects. Instead it was full of eye rolling (Silver, the horse, running through the passenger train) and decent but obvious CGI effects.

I think I could have accepted all of this if they did not ruin the Lone Ranger character. I could have had fun and got psyched up. It was just a huge mistake made by the writers. I know this was Tonto's film but my goodness. At least show him becoming more of a man.

I look at a film like the Mask of Zorro and think about how right they got it. Lots of Humor but always respect paid to the main hero. Fantastic, realistic, and practical actions scenes that were far more exciting and fun then anything in the final 30 min of The Lone Ranger.

I am glad some of you got enjoyment out of this.. I am also glad it failed because this was not (he was not) The Lone Ranger and Disney would be better served to make better movies and no more Lone Ranger films.

As a film, as I reflected on it as time passed between my first (and only, this far) viewing, I found it to be a pretty good movie, but, as I was sitting there, I experienced a lot of the same frustration that you're having. I think, in my original post, I even made the same comparison that you did (that Hammer was playing his character like Johnny Depp would Sparrow), and, to this day, it still bugs me how much of a buffoon they made him. I really liked the end sequence, though; I thought "that's the Lone Ranger I've been waiting to see."

With that being said, twenty minutes just wasn't enough time to make up for what they'd done in that first two hours and ten minutes. It's just sad that the film bombed so bad that we'll never get to see Disney's version of the character redeemed. I'd love nothing more than to see another studio pick it up and give it the "Mask of Zorro" treatment that you were referring to. I wholeheartedly agree that that film is how this genre should be done.

I could have had fun with the last 30 min had I liked his character. But they just ruined him so much that when the, more ranger like, came the film had lost me and I just could not accept him as the Lone Ranger. Also had the film not Bombed so badly they just would have made another one and followed the same formula. They would just think... Why mess with a good thing?

The Lone Ranger should have been more The Mask of Zorro and less The Mark of Zorro I can't get over how bad they screwed up the 2nd film of that series. Same cast and director. But much more CGI and they did not bring back the Sword fighting coordinator and man did it show.


PS - I did not realize you compared the actor with Jack Sparrow also. Great minds my friend.... Great minds

You know I haven't seen this movie, but everything you just said is the reason why. This is exactly what I figured from the previews what this movie would be.

I thought the previews looked bad also. It's why I skipped it in the theaters. But since many here and on another forum I visit, enjoyed it I thought I would keep my expectations low and just role with it.

I did not expect to hate The Lone Ranger character.... That really blew the whole film for me. I thought I would hate Depp but he was not half bad but perhaps that is because of what I had to compare him to.

I agree with you guys actually, Lone Ranger was goofy and stayed that way too long... I wanted to see more of Tonto because of it.

I would love to see a sequel with the Lone Ranger being a bit more bad *** and a more talkative Tonto.
