The brilliance of ToD...
It followed the Bond formula of moving ever forward rather than looking back (like the new ones do). I'm a huge supporter of "the further adventures of..." stories rather than constant "origin" stories and/or prequels and reboots (which at the end of the day is just a 2nd chance to do it again).
Sadly it was Spielberg himself who ushered in the "cram-in-the-callbacks" into a 10-minute opening in the next Indy film that revealed how young Indy gained all of his signature character bits in one hastily thrown-together train chase -- from his chin scar to his fear of snakes. One of the many reasons I think its almost the worst Indiana Jones movie.
I think the only time we've ever gotten such a prequel was Temple of Doom. Not a single callback other than the brief moment he reached for his pistol in front of the two Thugee swordsman. Probably won't ever see such a film again.
