Obviously, the eventual choice was the Captain Kirk mask.

Tommy Lee Wallace bought at least 3 masks (speculation) and took the following steps to create the mask that we all know, fear, and love.
-Tore off sideburn and eyebrow hair
-Enlarged the Eyeholes
-Spray painted the mask "Fish Belly White", as he describes it
- Misted the hair black with "Streak n' Tips".
Modern can of Black Streak n' Tips
Wallace's unconventional methods caused much of the paint to wear off throughout filming, causing the mask to naturally weather itself over the 30-day filming period. The hair also became lighter throughout filming due to the fact that only the top of the hair was misted, not all of it (the hair).

Many argue that Tommy Lee Wallace only created one of the 3 masks and that the 2 stunt masks were created by Don Post Studios and given to the filmmakers. This theory is plausible when considering the state that the 2 stunt masks kept during filming. One stunt mask, as seen below, kept all of its white paint even after filming, and the hair is black all the way through. If DPS did create this stunt mask, it would make much sense that the paint and hair work would be of higher quality.

Where are the Original Masks Today?
Out of the 3 masks used for filming,
only the hero mask's location is definitively known. Member Kirk Magnum claims to know where at least one stunt mask resides today, but that will be addressed shortly.
The Hero Mask
I have heard several different stories about where the hero mask went after the filming of Halloween (1978). After someone can post here and clarify, I will edit the post. Here are the two stories that have been circulated:
1. Debra Hill took the hero mask after filming and kept it in a shoebox under her bed until the filming of Halloween II (1981), which sped up the deterioration process.
2. The hero mask was given to Nick Castle and displayed on his fireplace mantel until Debra asked for it back to film Halloween II, but never returned it.
For the longest time, members believed theory #1 above.. Until Nick Castle made some claims that questioned it at a Q&A at Monster Mania Con 17 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Around the 1:35 mark in the video below, Castle states that he had the original mask for "a couple years" after the filing for Halloween wrapped. He also claims that he had the mask on display in his home until right before Halloween began production. Castle says that Debra Hill called him asking if he had the original mask in his possession because they could not make a duplicate one close enough to it and no one remembered who owned it. Nick Castle then allowed them to use it for Halloween II and claims that Debra Hill told him he would get it back when filming concluded. Contrary to Debra's promise, Castle states that he never got the mask back.
Skip to the 1:35 mark in the following link to hear the above statements:

Some members speculate that both Debra and Nick are telling the truth. It is possible that Debra Hill took home the Hero mask, while Nick Castle took home one of the stunt masks. Perhaps the mask that Castle brought home and then gave to Hill was used in Halloween II as a stunt mask. If this were the case, it would make complete sense that Castle never got it back was because one of the Halloween II stunt masks was destroyed in the fire scene at the end of Halloween II.
Regardless of who took what, **** warlock kept the Hero mask from Halloween (1978) after filming of Halloween II (1981) wrapped. For some time, **** Warlock kept the mask on display next to his Hero Friday the 13th Hockey mask and Hood.

After some years, someone found out that **** Warlock had the mask on display. The video and pictures below, taken in 1996, are some of the last documentations of the mask before it was sold to a private collector, who owns it today.

In 2003, private collector and haunted attraction owner, Mark Roberts of Tiffin, Ohio, purchased the mask from **** Warlock for a reported sum of $13,000. He still owns the mask to this day and rumors recently circulated claiming that he plans on getting the mask restored, and keeps it in a temperature-controlled display case. Below is the last known picture of the Hero mask from Halloween (1978) and Halloween II (1981).

The Stunt Masks
It is widely believed that one of the stunt masks was burnt in the end scene of Halloween II, but I am not sure if this is confirmed. Member Billy Kirkus (AKA Kirk Magnum) claims that he has talked with someone involved with the original two Halloween films and that they claim to have a mask from Halloween (1978).
The following post was made on November 1st, 2015:
He also made a thread, which can be found here:

He has since made no other updates.
The other stunt mask was used in Halloween II for the "messy blood tears" scene. The following photos shows the mask being worn by JLC after the filming of Halloween (1978), and the next is comparing that mask to the messy blood tears mask from Halloween II.
