They had a ideology that they pushed back on the day. It was just a different one from today. The messaging is clear and all over the place.

What you are accusing Hollywood of doing today is nothing new. They have always done that.

Difference being you agreed with the old messaging and disagree with the new one so you notice it more.

...and what messaging would that be?

Yes ideology has always been everywhere, forever. The difference is in the past any 'messaging' was subtle and the teams behind most successful projects cared very much about what they were doing. The politics didn't overwhelm. Now they do and to pretend things are the same as they always were is just a grotesque lie.

For the record, being gay but also being rather a capitalist I've been stuck in the middle of two extremes many times in my life. It never stopped me enjoying the vast majority of media. Until 2015 came along and everything changed.

So, no, it's not the ideology that's the problem, it's the lunatics who have made those issues more important than storytelling.

I will never understand why so many studios buy the rights to something immensely popular and successful, something with a built in audience and then feel the need to destroy everything that made it unique and interesting.... its completely nonsensical.
One of the primary reasons is the vast differences between certain types of media; and then there is also the simpler reason that a lot of directors and producers have their own ideas and dare I say, egos.

I've been in the room when producers and directors are talking, and it's 'conventional wisdom' to never have the writer on set. They're just going to waste everyone's time with their original vision, LOL.

Just watch any Connery Bond movie the messaging is very clear and not subtle. In fact it’s not subtle really in any of it when I think about it. We are treading political talk here.

The difference isn’t how they do it now. It’s our nostalgia. We are more forgiving with the old stuff. Despite how adult me sees how Connery Bond is, I still have those memories growing up and enjoying watching them with my Dad.

I don’t see the politics any more overwhelming then what happened in the past. However social media and everyone talking politics 24/7 does bring more awareness to how entrenched it is everywhere.

For me the biggest problem with the show is it was never amazing and never quite felt "Witchery" enough for me, they got Cavill at a time where he was readily available to show up as much as they wanted him to but instead they wasted him in favor of Yennefer and Ciri and then other characters like Fringilla in the second season.

The main reasons why I never thought the show would take off in the way Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon have is because of the budget and the writting, Netflix was never commited to putting in the kind of money HBO puts into their programs and it shows, quite painfully so, The Witcher always felt cheap, small and bland, the monster, character and armor designs are all forgettable especially compared to what the video games did and the writting was never award winning material either it's very much the type of modernized dialogue you would expect to find in the MCU and to make matters worse the writers threw away the source material and made questionable decisions like having Yen lose her powers, the character assassination of Vesemir and the whole Eskel fiasco.

Now with Henry leaving I don't see how Netflix thinks they can save this sinking ship, I'm sure some will keep watching but the majority will probably jump ship too after the third season, Netflix should've done everything in their power to keep Henry on board and if he was dead set on leaving then they could've tried giving him a movie deal to close out the story and leave it open ended for a continuation or reboot if he ever decided to return to the role but unfortunately it seems like Netflix's arrogance knows no bounds and they think Liam Hemsworth will save this train wreck... what sucks is The Witcher has tons of potential but the way Netflix and the writers botched this whole thing will leave a sour taste in a lot of mouths so much so that I don't expect to see someone attempt a proper Witcher adaptation any time soon after the show is inevitably cancelled after the 4th or 5th season.

It's crazy how these no-name Hollywood hacks think they can write better stories than the creator of the widely beloved properties.
True the source material; the wandering sell-sword White Wolf books are terrific (also in comic form), all somewhat ahead of their time, especially all the chaos realm, and (Lovecraftian) conjunction of the spheres elements, time-space dimension displacement, crossed into the sword/fantasy genre, are absolutely fantastic.

The Weird of the White Wolf (1961)- 'You are pledged to serve Chaos, Elric, as were your ancestors. You will serve Chaos! The time draws near when both Law and Chaos will battle for the Realm of Earth and Chaos shall win! Earth will be incorporated into our Realm and you will join the hierarchy of Chaos, become as we are! '

Elric at the End of Time (1985) - Somehow she had to return Elric to his own dimension without creating further disruptions in the fabric of Time and Space. The Conjunction was not due yet and, if things got any worse, might never come. So many plans depended on the Conjunction of the Million Spheres that she could not risk its failure. But she could not reveal too much either to Elric or his hosts.

I'm sad that Henry left- I guess he probably took some other movie project on. It's a shame, but nothing we can do. However, it's not going to stop me watching the show (or replaying the game or re-reading or listening to the books). I'm a huge fan, so yes, while Cavil was SUCH a perfect casting, I'm not going to pout and refuse to watch because they picked another actor. I hope he's good.

The only good thing about the Witcher show was literally Henry Cavill. All other characters were horribly miscasted, and the storyline was terrible. Like most of you, I thought season 1 was just average, like a 6/10. By season 2, once I got to the episode with Eskel, I was so annoyed with how the show was such a big departure from the source material that I just dropped the show and never looked back.

The Witcher show doesn’t even exist in my mind and I blocked it out completely.

Whoever approved Jaskier’s “haircut” should be fired. Along with the rest of the costume staff who thought Yen’s bikini dress was a great idea. Along with the writers who thought this show after S1 was a good idea.
I believe Yen's bikini look is inspired by India, so is her "magical movements" as the actress has Indian roots. I saw some article about that. I'm all about a proper representation and diversity, but come on, Yen would never wear these lol

Won't discuss Jaskier's wig lol

However I think overall production quality and cinematography looks better, at least in the trailer.

Forgot this thread existed. Not sure why only half of the replies were moved since it kills some context from comments which probably should have all been moved to here. But anyway….

God I hate these showrunners.

Hear hear. These Hollywood kids nowadays keep getting the keys to dad's vintage sports car without caring where it even came from or even how to maintain it. Hopefully this served as a good lesson in vetting the right people for future projects.

Ok ok...keep it positive 😅 Well...at least we'll always have memories of Henry looking badass in that armor.

I don't see any reason to, the showrunners have no respect for the source material nor their main star who was incredibly passionate about the show and the main reason it was so appealing in the first place. Recasting your main star 4 seasons in instead of putting in some effort and working out creative differences is basically suicide.

I agree.

Well, they changed a lot, I don't think they could really go back to following the source material.

I can understand both sides of the situation. There needs to be some creative licence for the writers. Otherwise, they aren't writing anything new, just carbon copying the novels. Henry wanted it to be just like the books, which is rarely going to be the case with TV show adaptations. I mean, I read the Dexter novels and The Handmaid's Tale, and both made big changes from the novels, but I still enjoyed both adaptations.

I've never read the Witcher books, but I felt season 2 was just very poorly written. Changing the story from the source material is one thing, but writing it poorly is something else. The show could still be good with decent writing and story arcs.

Some adaptations can be vastly different from their source, but that doesn't mean they can create some great new storylines. The Cleon dynasty brought into Foundation is the most interesting part in the series, and it was not in the books.
I've also enjoyed The Wheel of Time, which I know deviates a lot from the books also.

Sometimes, it is better not to have read the source material before coming into a new adaptation.
