Just repelled a definite note scam :yess:

Proud of myself.

Would rather it hadn't happened in the first place but if I'd fallen for it or given in to the expected protestations it would have ruined the rest of my day and probably still pissed me off for a few days later.

A money scam. A customer handed in a 100 euro note to pay for 2 items, waited till I'd cashed it off and handed back the change, then ''suddenly realised'' he had a 10 euro note after all and looked for the 100 back. At some point during this he would have withheld 50 euro (up his sleeve typically) - giving me back only 50 - and he would have pretended I still owed him the full 100. They cover it (a clear scam when you type it out like that) with all sorts of hand movements and chatter to confuse you, also banking on A) you not seeing it coming in the first place, perhaps not being sure you gave them the correct change from the start and B) the shop worker caving under the pressure to just get rid of them when a queue builds up behind them.

I've fallen for it before, ****ing wasn't happening again. **** you scammer.

He dragged it out quite a while with the usual counter-accusations and abuse but when he saw I wasn't bluffing about calling the police because the squad car was coming down the road the other 50 note from his original change ''miraculously'' reappeared on the floor, quel surprise.

:woo the good guys :hi5:

A few years back one of the other shop supervisors was counting a certain checkout operator's change bag and pulled out a one-sided, black & white photocopy of a one hundred dollar bill.

Guessing what had happened, the supervisor went over to the checkout operator and asked her for change for that same dodgy hundred. The operator took the note and without batting an eyelid handed over a hundred's worth of smaller notes.

I remember that same operator asking me how many twenty cent pieces were in her $4-roll of twenty-cent pieces. 20 years on I still remember her name. You don't forget stupid like that.

:lol :lol :lol

Excellent.

You know what's frustrating though, win or lose, I still keep running this through my head since it happened. I wasn't caught by it, yet I am still a bit stressed about it I have to say. I guess its because no matter how sure you think you are they still manage to put a bit of doubt in your mind. That bothers me.

That's what con artists do and they're good at it. "But fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me."
