Society needs to find that balance, the happy medium.

Social media has given everybody a voice and fashioned them all equal. Then the mainstream media does their bit by reporting on the latest moron utterance as though it reflects a general attitude or disposition.

It's elsewhere too of course. There was this survey done recently about sexual harassment and assault on Australian university campuses, and it found that 70% of female students had been sexually harassed or assaulted whilst at university. Then you look at the survey questions and it includes as harassment "being looked at in a way that made you feel uncomfortable" and counts "public transport to and from university" as being "at university".

Based on these findings, reported as gospel and without interrogation by the MS media, universities introduced a raft of measures in response, thereby giving more credence to statistics based on subjective perception and external remit.
