I've been thinking about this for a few days now... The world is a pretty jacked up place. With people decapitating innocent people on buses and idiots dressing up like the Joker to steal posters... I'm surprised we haven't seen anyone take the law into their own hands and bust some heads on the street.

Now, I don't mean that they have to dress like a Bat or something like that. Even a Frank Castle type that just blows people away and has no rules. Either way, we haven't seen it.

So I would like to pose a question... If you had the means and were screwed up enough to go for it... would you do it? Be a vigilante?

I know that I had my own fantasies about this as a child, after being raised in a very hostile home, around drugged out family members and wannabe criminals. Especially after my Mother's lifestyle led to her death. If I would have inherited tons of money... I might have done something. But I was and still am... pretty damn poor. I would make a horrible crime fighter.

But if I could...I would. Jackasses like that bus stabber... need to have their arms and legs broken, bleed in an alleyway somewhere for 9 hours or so before actually going to jail. Some criminals go too far, knowing that they will just be put in jail and nothing really horrible will happen for it. And if they are crazy enough, they will end up in a padded room away from any danger. I think it would be nice to add another element of retribution to the equation, make them pay a bit before they get their nice cushy cell. But then again, I'm a bit twisted in the head.... :lol

But seriously, if you had the money and could imagine doing it.... would you?

If i became a viglinate where i live all i would be doing to tackling criminals who drop litter or break the speed limit. Probalie be that guy in TMNT who wears the hockey mask and skates.

Yeah, my town just has the standard pimps, drug dealers and gang members.... but it would still be fun to break a few bones anyway... :devil

And awesome pic Chase! One of my favorite movies... :rock

For me, I'd have to have no regard for what happens to me. If I had the means to do something like that and no fear of what happens to me, I'd do it. The world needs heroes not bound by the rules established becuase let's face it, those rules leave too many loopholes for the guilty to go free and unpunished, OJ, so it'd take someone outside the rules to get things done.

The big issue is, who are we as vigillantes to decide appropriate punishment.

That's the trick. I know if I were able to do it and did... I would have rules.. I don't think I would dare kill anyone... I'd just make them wish they were dead. :D

You would have to operate outside the system for sure and once you started... you would most certainly be hunted. So concealment of your identity would be a must... But it could work... I'm still very surprised we have never seen it happen in real life.

id actually like to lay down the law on old people who dont know how to drive. this problem seems to be spreading like an epidemic. everyday me and my friends open up the paper and go to the police section and its full of the same thing:"accident occurred when *insert name* age 75 pulled out in front of......" seriously its sickening. the other day a 78 year old truck driver hit a motorcycle. the motorcycle driver was fine but why are we driving semis at that age? seriously?

That would be hilarious to see some guy dressed up shoot the tires out of some old woman's caddy and pull her off to the side of the road... only to promptly cut up her license and tell her not to drive anymore... that she is a danger to others on the road. :lol

Truth be told, it is a problem... here in FL... it's a sickness... you can't go anywhere and not be surrounded by "the Driving Dead" :banghead

That's the big problem for me, and really human nature doesn't lend people to being able to handle power like that. There was a classic study done where college students volunteered and some were locked in a faux prison, and some were made prison guards and they were told to just play pretend. It didn't take long for the prison guards to let this power go to their heads and they started abusing their power. I don't recall all the specific details to it (way too many studies and such in my head to keep them all straight).

On the other hand I have to say there are some types of people who I really wish I could just bust some heads.

To do it, you'd have to have concrete moral values in hand before going for it. As Agent said, it's human nature to abuse power and go too far. And in real life, vigilantes would not have a "Joker" to remind them of what you would become if you did go too far.

Really, it would have to be done with great care and devotion. But it could be done right, I think. There is a shortage of truly good people in this world I think, and that's the saddest fact of all.

Career vigilantes would probably survive a week or so if they are lucky:lol. You better get an entire vigilante army if you want to do something against crime nowadays.

Plus, where is the line? A guy stealing TDK posters with Joker make-up on, who cares. That's not exactly a severe crime in my book.

It just doesn't work because we all have different viewpoints on justice.

yeah id like to do that and scare some poor old lady and she'd be all "dont hurt me!! ill never drive again!! i swear to god!!" and id be all
"SWEAR TO ME!!!!"

I used to fantasize about being a vigilante when I was a kid (like 10). I even started planning how I would make a functioning Azrael Bat-suit.

Then I realized there really was not enough crime in my suburb to warrant a vigilante. Also, even with the low amount of crime, I'd probably still manage to get myself killed.

I swear though, if anything ever happened to my son, I'd go Punisher on this world.

I think even with concrete morals a person would start to slip. I think most people can think of some criminal from history or some type of criminal who deserves to die, and coming across that person would be very tempting to kill. Especially if there is a good chance they could get off easy in a trial. And then you're on a slippery slope.

Good people don't become vigilantes, ego-maniacs and deluded idiots become vigilantes. Good people become social workers, aid-workers, monks/nuns etc..
Shortage of really good people can't be measured by the shortage or absence of vigilantes.

I think they did that story in one of veronica mars episode. dont recall the ending but the prison guard student basically abused his power.

That's my whole point... it doesn't have to be that way. Good people can be vigilantes, it just hasn't happened yet. Yeah, they would probably get taken out pretty fast... but I am surprised it hasn't happened. Some guy who was a SEAL or something like that, with a lot of training and some money to finance his crusade...

And the guy in the Joker makeup was just a joke, really. Not deserving of anything harsh... just thought it was funny that he did that but yet... no one ever has "pulled a Batman". Just shows how twisted the world is, everyone wants to be the bad guy.

I agree. I think the kind of person that could actually go through with being a comic-type vigilante would have to be extremely self absorbed and delusional.

I would wear a Hockey mask and carry around a golf bag full of sports equipment. Then beat the hell out of the bad guys. :D
