i have no idea about the validity of the seller, but I will say there have been a couple of times I needed to sell something quick and I ended up trying to avoid ebay because of the potential timeframe my money would be held in limbo. My sell was legit, but I needed the money ASAP. And it was a potential problem.

i may be wrong cause Im not a frequent ebayer, but I think when you receive the item you can leave positive feedback which will immediately release the money. At least thats how it used to be. Ive even messaged a buyer before asking them to leave me positive feedback so it would release my payment.
You could potentially tell the guy to ship the item and you'll be all over leaving positive FB as soon as you get it to release his money. Him getting his money will be dependent on how fast he can get you the product.... :monkey1

Buying outside ebay is dodgy even through Paypal.
If you buy through Paypal they will protect if you don't receive the item but if you receive it and it's not as described, broken etc. they aren't interested.
Buying through ebay gives you more options for a partial refund or return if an item isn't as described plus the feedback system works.

I don't think that's true at all. I believe you have to pay shipping back no matter what, but if you do, you should always get a refund through paypal. Both ebay and paypal ALWAYS side with the buyer.

I got a pretty decent deal on the item so I decided to trust him and pay, thanks for all the advise though everyone.

Its still a legit transaction through PAYPAL only, you will not have any ebay protection. The only reason why he has asked for you pay him directly though paypal and not through ebay is so he cam skip out on paying fees
