Yesterday, my family invested in a blu ray player, and I am excited, as I have been put off buying alot of recent films to to the format change (I can FINALLY get BATMAN BEGINS in July!) The first titles I bought were the Rambo Trilogy and RAMBO (which looked amazing, BTW.) I'm a huge classic horror and sci-fi fan, with a vast DVD collection. While I'd rather buy new titles that I never owned on DVD, I'll get an upgrade of a movie I love, if it's worth it (Superman, anyone?)

What are the best looking titles out right now?

The recent Blade Runner release should be at the top of your list. Amazing looking and a great restoration. All the extras are great, too. A 'must buy' in my opinion.

Black Hawk Down is a great one to show off the sound capabilites of Blu Ray.

High Def Digest

Great one for reviews and release updates.

Great time to just aboard... The Godfather will be put before the the of the year.

Blade Runner and Close Encounters of the Third Kind are fantastic in Blu-ray. I own them myself and never regretted the purchase for a second.

I borrowed The Patriot from a friend of mine and was totally blown away by the picture quality of it. Big fish is also very cool, but you have to love that kind of movies.
The Disney/Pixar movies are also excellent in Blu-ray.

Hellboy is one of my faves. I don't always see a noticeable diff from upconverted DVD to Blu-Ray, but I definitely see a noticeable difference on Hellboy. Sounds great too.

Don't forget to check deep discount's 20% off sale. (see stickied cheapskate thread for details)

Amazon has a 2 for $30 going on right now with titles like Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth. You should check it out. :)

I agree with many of the above recommendations.

No Country for Old Men, 300, 3:10 to Yuma, Planet Earth (the BBC version), and Enchanted all look fantastic on bluray.

Any Harry Potter movie,Narnia,Predator,Avp,Avp:R,28 days later, and kingdom of heaven. Those are a few I enjoy on blu-ray.

My essentials?

Gone in 60 Seconds - Its amazing to see the car action in this format especially throughout the Long Beach chase where you actually see the reflection of thinsg in the water and the hoods of the car.

Casino Royale - Not only is the action awesome but the locales are great and really show off the differences in nature, etc.

Pan's Labyrinth - GDT's fairy tale kicks all kinds of ass in this format.

300 - Same as PL....its just amazing

Independence day is pretty good and Batman begins comes out in a couple weeks. You might also wanna get some movies that have an 1:85 aspect ratio like Planet Earth.

I just got Bladerunner for $14.95 @ amazon. But I think the sales over. The "Planet Earth" DVD set is awesome, it was shot in HD so it looks really good.

All these movies look great in in bluray

the only problem with PL is that there's some heavy noise reduction done to the picture on the US disk... everything looks soft and waxy. I'd go with the European disk, because the picture is unaltered, but there's no HD sound for that version (but that doesn't bother me much because i dont have a sound system that can decode HD audio...)
