What, exactly, constitutes a "Grail"?

For me a grail is something rare and expensive that I have little hope of obtaining. It could even be something that doesn't exist.

For a long time my grail was the lenticular movie poster for Lost World. But I was able to get that. One collectible I value more than most is my 1/4 scale Christopher Reeve. But that didn't exist so I didn't know I was missing it.

yeah. my situation with the Bronze bernie Frank bust.... until Lonnie started posting pics I didnt know it existed.
Now Id consider it my "grail" of sorts.

...another grail for me is an unbuilt kit of Ironman Com., Doom PF and Capt. America :monkey2

The biggest grail of all time for me would be a World War Hulk on throne comiquette or PF.

This would be a grail I would like to get or even just look at in real person:

For me it was the Frighteners Lenticular one sheet. Took me damn near 10 years to score one of those.

Why so long to acquire? Rare, or expensive, or both?

Any pictures? Sounds mighty neat.

I'll say one thing.....in recent times I've seen the word grail tossed around so much it has lost its meaning for me considerably.

I agree. Seems every new exciting piece is very quickly labeled as a grail...

Not only that but I've read three or four different posts in the FS threads here and in other forums using the word "Grail" to justify pricing, justify selling and in a lot of intros to the pieces themselves. Enough with the grail already. If everything is a grail then in reality nothing really is.

It was always too expensive for me and doesn't show up on ebay too often. I finally got one at a good price that was in less than mint condition. The funny thing is, I actually acquired the 6'x4' lenticular standee before I got the poster and paid less for it.:lol

being more specific might help. i know of a few grails for sale. doom, im, grey hulk all should qualify. what don't you think should be considered a grail? and also, the person making the purchase should be aware that just because something says grail, doesn't make it so. but if they are willing to fork over 4 digits, they may know a little.

Just because something sells for 4 digits doesn't make it a grail. I for one could care less about some of them, and have no desire to own them just because of their secondary market value.

i didn't say because it's four digits, that it's a grail. i said that if someone has four digits to spend, they are likely to be educated in the subject of what is and what isn't a grail.

If someone's goal in life was to one day own a Sideshow Yavin Luke figure, then that would be considered that person's grail. price doesnt mean ****.

i apologize. i thought the discussion was about what the mainstream collecting community considered to be a grail, usually associated with a hefty price tag.

my grail is two perfect gumby and pokey rubber figures. both are original circa 1960s and look like they were just removed from the packaging. they were actually given to me by a neighbor who was going to toss them. as a kid, i played with gumby and pokey until the wire allowing articulation had ripped through the thin rubber outer layer. but to have a set in perfect condition adorning my shelves is the *hits!!! :D they are worth probably 5 bucks.
