I was just thinking what can we expect in the coming years with collectibles like action figures and maybe statues.

I have a few ideas of what thing may look like in the near future. One Idea is the use of real like hair to really make these sculpts look realistic. Another is the use of a silicone or thin rubber like material that would cover the head sculpt to change expressions. I can also see 50+ points of articulation becoming common and the days of 5+ sets of static hands with every release would be a thing of the past.

So anyone else got any ideas of what we might see in the future?

Look at what collectibles look like now, then compare that to what stuff looked like say 10 years ago. In 10 years all the collectibles now will be that crappy. :lol

Thats where I got the idea:lol I created a thread in A&R section about vintage terminator collectibles and a few people posted pics of the oldies next to the newer stuff and this topic came up. Thought it would make for and interesting thread:)

Heres an example of the evolusion up til now

Now what does the future hold:panic:

dna coding & "honey i shrunk the kids" technology & we will have little live collectibles in the foreseeable future......:yess:

i just hope in the process they develop them so we don't have to feed them...:lecture

i can't bear the thought of having to put my collectibles in a cage of cedar chips..........:panic:

I'm hoping that in 10 years time people will give up on unrealistic ideas like rubber or silicon bodies that look realistic and doll hair on action figures.

Mini holographic emitters that can display a lifelike/solid looking 3d full colour image at various pre-set sizes. Then you just buy the character or image you want from the online holo-store just like any other app or whatever and it gets downloaded to your storage device of choice. They might even be adjustable as far as pose goes, seeing as how they would be, at their core, just glorified 3d model/scans anyhow.

Thing is we're moving further and further into a future where physical 'hard copy' materials are becoming, if not obsolete, at least unnecessary. We already have digital music, movies, books, games and comics, where you no longer need anything other than a compatible device, an online account, and a storage medium, and you can build collections larger than you could ever hope to practically store in a physical medium. I think eventally collectibles will venture into a similar direction.

That's my vision of the future anyhow...albeit probably quite a ways in the future.

Ehhh...no I can't see that happening. I think that would defeat the whole point of collectibles which is to have something tangible of your chosen subject. Not that we won't have holograms, I just don't think they'd take over in the collectibles arena.

Great imagination dude:hi5: I think there will always be room for the real things in my collection but, this idea of yours would eliminate the need for display cases and would save alot of space. The only problem is the collectible you just bought would likey be optsolete in a month or two if its anything like cell phone tech is today:lol

I have already envisioned it:
  • No more visible joints.
  • Posable "skeletons" covered with seamless body (silicone or perhaps new material)
  • Single battery, remote control operated light up features. Eventually, wireless electricity light up features.
  • Battery powered and remote control operated "mechanical" features (Iron Man face mask up or down, reveal hide War Machine weapons, moving Predator shoulder cannon, moving doors and flaps for Tumbler, regular to hoover wheels in BTTF Delorean.

and that is just the beginning! The technology for all of those already exist, they just have to start implementing it.

I really hope for some remote controlled operated lights sooner than later though. I barely use the light up features because they are pain to turn on.

Wow... That's heavy Doc...

I think things will start to plateau. Look at things like sports records for examples. Records are made by hundreds and thousandths of a second. Gone are the days of crushing records is over.
I think we will find figures will get better but not with leaps and bounds that we are currently seeing.

Thats how I see things too.

When 3D printers are standard home equipment, you'll be able to download the file and print your new character head or figure,
