Well, I bought a 1 TB drive for about $175. I think the usable size is around 975 GBs. Max file size for the FAT32 format that the PS3 recognizes is 4 GB, so I shrink the DVD's (just movies in DD 5.1, no extras, commentaries or DTS sound) down to 4 GB. You should be able to easily do over 200 full DVD movies. You could shrink them smaller as well, it depends on what quality you want vs amount of space you want to use per movie. You can also convert the VOB from the DVD to another codec like MP4 to reduce the file size as well with a PS3 video converter.

hmm. i'm pushing over 900 movies right now, and i liked the idea of having them available to call up at any time. by the sounds of it though i would need alot more that just one external drive.
i was hoping to be able to have like a listing with description and previews etc.
might be unrealistic, just thought it would be cool to have my whole movie collection within a remote controls range.

Geez...I thought I had a lot of movies...

You can't do all the descriptions, previews, etc. That is why the regular video servers are thousands of dollars. That is the trade off you make though. You can still hook up multiple hard drives at a fraction of the cost.

U could run a switch with externals that run cat5 on the network, mutiple drives just have to link the shares, LOL

yeah i've been collecting and ummm, let's just say collecting :lol for awhile, and yes that's the servers i was looking into, but i just decided to go with some nice displays, and had to convert all my dvds from 14mm cases to 7 mm cases, thus giving me more than double the space to store them.

PS3...no question. Load times are lightning fast, free updates, and you can play games if you so choose.

I went with PS3 as well. I have absolutely 0 games for it. Bought it strictly to play BR films on, along with it's ability to update itself wirelessly. Also upconverts my DVDs, and every once in awhile, I download free game demos from the online store :wacky

For a standalone budget I would go for the BD35. Mid BD55 and if you have money to burn either of the new Pioneer or Denon.

The more research I do and the more you guys talk it up, the more I'm leaning towards a PS3.

Is there anything else out there that'll update itself wirelessly?

Well, I don't think even a standalone that updates itself is as good as the PS3. For the price, the PS3 is clearly the best. See, I was going to go for a standalone player, because I thought that I had no need for a game console. When I went to Best Buy, I asked if they had any Blu-ray players, and they only had one: THE PS3! I was so dissapointed, I asked if they would be getting anymore standalones in, which is when the salesperson politely told me that the PS3 is the same price, upconverts DVDs, and has updates every so often, all of which I already knew, but since I was all excited about my new HD TV I had to get a Blu-ray player then and there. There is no question the PS3 is the way to go. I was impressed with the salesperson's knowledge, until of course he told me that I had to get one of those Monster $200 HDMI cables...at which point I said thanks for the info, got the PS3 and went on my way. I have never been as satisfied with a product as I am with this. I heard about some BD players taking up to 5 minutes to load a movie! I have never had any load times longer than 2 seconds. Updating is a breeze, and the PS store is a really cool idea. Download videos and game demos instantly. Man, I sound like a Sony fanboy (I am not, I promise :)) but I really like this machine. It is built like a tank too! It is clearly the Blu-ray player to own, and will be for some time.

i got all my hdmi cables from a online store, they custom make them to what ever length you need. i think it was bluejean or something wierd like that.

I have my first blu ray player on the way. I ordered it last week through an amazon sale. It was for the Samsung BD-P1500.

I missed out on the blu ray player for $215 shipped and it came with the Ultimate Matrix Collection the week before from amazon. When I checked back, I was happy to see the price of the Blu Ray player lowered to $212 shipped with a choice of 2 free movies (out of a list of 20). I winded up getting Batman Begins & Speed.

While getting the Ultimate Matrix Collection would've been a great pickup...I only liked the 1st Matrix movie. At least I got a chance to pick what I wanted in those 2 movies to sort of kick off my collection in addition to the Blu Ray player.

PS3 without a doubt. It's the most stable, fastest loading, most fully functional Blu-Ray player on the market today. Period. There are so many problems with players from other manufacturers not being able to play discs that I wouldn't even consider anything other than the PS3 at this point in the Blu-Ray game.
