I'm curious how many people prefer the stand where the ring goes around the figure's waist or the one where the figure is held up by a piece that goes between the legs?

I prefer the newer Hot Toys stands in every way. Especially the name plaques. I really wish that Sideshow would adopt those.

Yeah I agree with Mike. The new Hot Toys ones that go between the legs are way better. I hate the rings around the waist.

there's something to be said for the SS stands tho. ever get those $20 or so SS Gift Cards that you just don't wanna use because you can get whatever it is cheaper than $20 off on eBay? well that $20 card will get ya 4 stands shipped for about 5 bucks! and usually free card codes down in that thread in For sale section lol.
plus some of my HT figs just don't seem as secure w/ the crotch stands as i'd like. and i've heard the crotchies can damage the, er, crotch sometimes. hell i'd just as soon look at the waist ring as 2 black nob things around a figs groin lol

Not a fan of stands myself - I use a fishing line with one end hooked over a cable clip tacked into the wall and the other end tied around the belt or neck to prevent the figure falling over if bumped. Especially works a treat on floppy SS stormtrooper :)

hmm, this is interesting :) how would this fare with action poses? could you provide pics of this set-up?

I've been meaning to get my butt into gear and take some snaps - might take a day or two but I'll get onto it :)

I don't really like either actually. They're a necessary evil because I don't want my figures diving off the shelves or even just falling over on the shelf but each type of stand still makes me nervous or annoys me in some way.

The waist stand constantly springs upwards out of the plastic stalk or actually breaks through it over time and is then unstable. I also worry about the ring scratching paint off the waists of the likes of Predators or causing permanent indentations in rubber figures like Batman.

As for the crotch stand, yeah you're definitely restricted in your poses and it too could scratch paint or leave indentations albeit in a less noticeable area. And it too isn't the most stable, some figures you get the impression could still topple over even on this stand.

So not a fan of either type but I'm not sure what would work better.

I like Hot Toys crotch stand better. Sideshow stands grab the figure and bunch up the clothes making it look funny.

These aren't the best pictures, and the poses are pretty generic, but I think you get the idea - 3mm cable clips (last pic) tacked into the wall, a length of fishing line with two loops either end, with one end hooked to the clip and the other tied around the figure's belt/waist/neck etc.

I do like the 'museum' look that stands provide, and name plates look pro - but I like to handle my figures a lot, and with this method I can simply unhook them from their clip, bust a pose and pop them back safe in the knowledge that if they do take a tumble they won't be falling far. It's good for just about every pose, except the more acrobatic and one leg varieties.

@ Lejuan:

This is ingenious! I might try this with my samurais :) The string is inconspicuous :)

Thanks for this.

I like both, depending on the figure and the pose. I think the original with the ring is more secure, but if I'm dealing with a muscle body, or lots of layers of clothing, I have some trouble using it, and prefer the crotch grab.

However, in other cases, where I want their legs to stay pretty close together, I prefer the ring.

Further, in some cases, I prefer the ring that comes with the Sideshow stands because they have a gap between the ring and the vertical bar, so my figures aren't right up on the vertical bar (not sure if this makes sense).

What bothers me about the rings is if you want to hide it under the clothing, like a jacket that the figure is wearing, there is too much bulk in the back and it makes the clothing stick out.

I prefer the waist, I can usually hide the waist clamp pretty well within the clothing or what not. The crotch stand...I just dont like the way it looks.

I try not to use stand whenever possible, and the one's I am using are the medicom clear plastic ones because they aren't really a distraction. Of the HT stands though I like the waist one more because depending on the outfit, the metal part can be tucked under the clothing to be less distracting. I despise nameplates on stands and usually graphics as well. I like the figure to represent itself. IMO, if someone can't tell who or what the figure is (assuming they're familiar with the license) then it doesn't belong on my shelf.

Agreed.

And I must be the worst person at posing the figures, since I always see people not using stands, but whenever I try it just doesn't work.
