Why do you love statues?

I just love $tatue$. They are sooooo much better than toy figures.

Fantastic paint aps. Just look at that detailed hair. No way was it made in 3 seconds from a snake roll'd Playdoh!

Because it is awesome how they hold the same pose... forever.... and when you get sick of it, it will still hold the same pose... forever...

I also love how they take up space. That is awesome too.

:rotfl :goodpost:

I like statues better for a few reasons.

1) 1/4 size. No matter how good something is, the 1/6 scale still looks like a child's toy to me....which is appropriate I guess since that's where that scale originally comes from. (not saying HT's are now)

The 1/4 scale is so much more significant as a show piece and fits in to rooms like other display pieces (vases, paintings, etc)

2) I don't have the need to repose constantly. Honestly, I don't know how many people do really. Sure its nice when you first get a 1/6 figure and you might do a few poses in the first week ....how many times after the first month? The second? For most its close to zero.

One of the more bizarre things I see here is people that like the articulation but would never pose anything (or even take it out of the box) due to fear of deteriorating.

3) The sculpting of the human body is important to me.
I'm a long time martial artist and was a personal trainer for a while as well.

Joints ruin collectibles for me. I want the body to look natural.

Fully clothed its not so bad, but even so the body underneath the clothes is set facing forward and so never looks quite right posed any other way.

The new Terminator statue is a good example of a clothed statue. You can see the lat flare holding the arm up and the neck muscles contract as he turns his head.

And when it comes to shirtless, well there is no comparison. My 2 Bruce Lee's, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Conan would just look like toys with big ugly joints every few inches.

EDIT: Also, the holding of accessories. This ALWAYS looks cheesy to me and like a toy because the hands never quite grip anything correctly due to the need to be able to change hands and accessories. With the statues, the hand and its grip is sculpted to the piece and the figure looks like they are really holding their gun/sword/whatever.

4) Also polystone looks so much nicer than the 1/6 plastic generally used ....though saying that the 2 HD 1/4 Enterbay Lee statues I have look very nice in whatever they are made of.

And this could change because its more tradition than anything, but I love the giant detailed bases that Sideshow PF's generally come with. Its not really part of Hot Toys 1/6 offerings for some reason.

5) This one is only coming about recently but the 1/4 statues are looking better and better in terms of value for money as 1/6 figures continue to skyrocket while SS PF's stay relatively the same.

And somehow Enterbay lead the way here!?! Expensive 1/6 figures ....but their HD Bruce Lee statues in 1/4 scale are under $200.

I'm hoping this isn't going to change with the introduction of their HD T-800 which is articulated. Although that is great looking, I hope EB continue to release their HD statues as well.

A lot there. And you make your points very well. I've come to a different conclusion, but I can see where you are coming from.

It would be fun to debate each point, but I'll just focus in on this part for now:

2) I don't have the need to repose constantly. Honestly, I don't know how many people do really. Sure its nice when you first get a 1/6 figure and you might do a few poses in the first week ....how many times after the first month? The second? For most its close to zero.

I revisit/repose figures even years later, but that's not the point. Even if someone only poses a figure once and sticks with it forever, the point is he chose the display/pose, not the manufacturer. I only have a few true statues and I know that they look identical to the statues in other peoples collection. There is nothing of my personality and style in them at all. That's why I think Premium Format or "multimedia statues" are better. I only have one PF - Gandalf the Grey, and at least the fabric clothes allow for futzing that makes my display unique. However even that is quite limiting.

I like knowing that each figure in my collection is an entirely unique display, and that I might have a Spiderman that looks like this:

While another guy might have one that looks like this:

Two guys can buy the same figure and have completely different displays. On the other hand a statue, is a statue, is a statue.

high quality statue / PF / maquette is like a beautiful furniture..

whereas action figures such as hot toys will always be toys.. they are hot because the great details + hype lately but toys will always be toys.. in short, they are like touch up baby dolls, in my days, some baby dolls with its designer clothes can cost up to 1000 bucks..

look at all the insecure doll lovers trying to justify why they used to play with barbie when they were little. :lol

oh yeah they are called barbie dolls not baby dolls, forgive me, my daughter used to play them.. :) now they are nowhere in sight, i think the dog ate them or something..

i sign up to slam hot toys ridiculous price but this thread is quite fun.. :)

:rotfl :lol
This thread is hilarious.

I collect both but honestly I've always thought most of the 1/6 stuff looked more life like in general.
It all depends on what you're looking at though , I could make a list of why I'm not buying as many statues from sideshow anymore but I could also make a similar list for hot toys.

Just buy what you like the look of.

i collect the nicest pieces , no smaller than 1/4 scale, and display them in lighted display cases in my house, why? cause it looks freakin awesome, nothing worste than walking into a dull room, some have aqauriums, some have plants, some have swords, some have statues :), i have a combination :)

I personally like 1/4 scale figures, there isn't many good ones but the Enterbay Terminator? :rock Hell... the things I'm going to do to that.. I mean err.. something not sexual... :horse

look at all the insecure doll lovers trying to justify why they used to play with barbie when they were little. :lol

And look at all the insecure statue lovers having to constantly throw around terms like "doll" and "barbies" as insults.

"They look like dolls, I'm too MANLY to collect them."

Get over yourselves. :rolleyes2

C'mon now! The statue lovers are just as nerdy as the figure lovers and vice versa. I agree with a post further back, If you like it, buy it. Fanboyism never won anything... other than a few things like the lack of new SEGA consoles :(

:)

sometimes it is fun to put a little bit of spice to get threads alive,
otherwise it will be so boring...

i hope nobody gets really offended.. its only forum talks..

i mean a person could say it like "highly sophisticated rubber plastic action figures" but that would be like so nerdy book like..

same goes with statues... you can call it stones or "highly artistic sculpted stones plastic glass combination .. "

"dolls and barbie" on the other hands, manage to stirs up emotions.. manage to make people reacts..

just get the main point from people statement, do not let get your emotion involved... woman usually controlled by their emotions all the time.. men on the other hands, prefer to use brain to control emotion.. :)

peace to all..
