Why isn't Sideshow Collectibles the number one?

I don't think they're number one per se.

Not everything they put out is gold, but with that said, they have so many big licenses. And it's come to a point where a lot of people (typically, us old timer collectors) are sick of the billion iron man armors, and or black widow, captain America, Thor variants. However, with these licensed franchises being so big, hot toys will probably attract tons of new collectors. So they sort of win at the end?

Also, I think it's really hard to judge who's on top cause a lot of people are fans of different things. 3ZERO is putting a lot of cool stuff out that hot toys wouldn't dare attempt cause to them, make mine marvel. As such, other projects get shelved, which can be really annoying to collectors cause we are given these announcements and previews of (what look to be awesome) figures, but yet we don't see anything till years later (Arkham Batman, RE6).

Lastly, when discussing the 1/6 hobby itself, there are a ton of specialized companies that provide a little something for everyone. Sideshow will put out comic versions of our beloved DC, Marvel characters. 3ZERO will do game of thrones, HALO, Titan fall, and the walking dead (all big franchises). ACI toys? They got their lord of the rings. PHICEN will always put out weird rubber lady dolls with realistic bits. Soldier story and DAM will do military (and sometimes their own unique creation), the very reason why this became big, and don't you forget that.

Something for everyone and I'm not even done listing every company.

All in all, we come out number one.

If SSC did more niche characters like Plissken, Ash, Beetlejuice etc, (which better quality) business would sway way more in their favor. But, there's nothing beating the onslaught of Marvel figures right now from Hot Toys. I don't think they're hurting for money at all, but their reputation sure has. They pay for cheap labor with cheap supplies, and you get cheap products for the most part. I know a lot of guys on here who've spent years buying from them, and complain how older stuff seems to have more love and care put into them then stuff recently. Hot Toys will always, always, be on top.

It's just silly to think so many third party companies (some of which no one has heard of until they put out a big name product) put out stuff that is leaps and bounds beyond SSC.

One thing I will say about SSC: the only licensed figure I've ever bought from them was Snake Plissken, and I was utterly disappointed with the quality. Also, it was the only figure I ended up returning, in all of the years that I've bought Hot Toys products from their site.

Hmm I don't see anything prohibiting comparing sideshow with hot toys. Initially thought it might be an issue since sideshow is part of the name of this forum and maybe there was some protectionist code of conduct going on.

Welcome to the new Sideshow Freaks board!

If this were the logic for the board, most threads wouldn't need to be open after the first post where the product is shown. It appears the thread is steering into waters that make you uncomfy....

I just see this thread turning into a A versus B, which is always sad and not what the OP asked for/about. Nanjin's post was insightful and apt.

IF they did a Mad Max, Beetlejuice, or Michael Wincott I would buy it regardless of who made it.

Both are very popular makers, pushing the envelope, and I appreciate that they support the hobby. Just the SSC figures didn't do it for me so that I simply lost interest. My SSC figures were either sold (at a loss) or cancelled. SSC may need to drop the price so that I can part them out, or increase the quality.

HT are like crack, so as the prices go up I simply get more selective. I may lose some money on a few Hot Toys if I decided to sell it but they're too hard to part with. And they have the market cornered with superhero movies. Nice quality, fun accessories, and interesting characters is what I want.

Don't be sad! The OP did mention two companies in his opening statement, so a comparison would seem to be natural. No harm in that.
