It isn't possible to be both cliched and edgy at the same time. That plotline is -- and Avatar was -- cliched.

Cameron had to go soft for the first one to make sure that the audience spectrum was as wide as possible.
Lets remember that Avatar is the most expensive indie movie, Disney passée on it and Fox got the distribution rights by taking charge of the research and devellopment for years.
The actual production money came from private investors companies we almost never hear of.
So he had to tame down his original treatment wich was not uber violent but more intense.
