No way. This movie is overrated, and I don't consider any of the characters iconic. I'm not saying The Departed isn't a good movie. It is. But it's not a remarkable one. I actually prefer Infernal Affairs, which I saw about a year before The Departed. Also, the characters in The Departed aren't interesting from an aesthetic standpoint. At least with movies such as Gladiator, the characters look interesting.

You are clearly racist against badass Irish dudes from South Boston.

You guys are insane. THE DEPARTED is magnificent and right up there with GOODFELLAS.

In fact, The Departed > Infernal Affairs.

Yes, I said it.

It's really not fair to compare The Departed against Infernal Affairs. One is a masterpiece by one of the greatest film directors of all time. The other is a trilogy made in a completely different style with different objectives in a different world.

I think the people who feel strongly toward Infernal Affairs are responding to elements that aren't present in The Departed. The whole feel and look and pacing of Infernal Affairs is so Asian that it's escapist. It's a trilogy so it's more like a mini-series. You watch it and you're transported to a different culture.

Meanwhile the Departed is much more condensed, more dramatic -- almost melodramatic by comparison -- and a proper film. While it does transport the viewer to a different world it is still decidedly America. It's also more polished and more artistic. And the dialog is like poetry! Now maybe the dialog and acting in Infernal Affairs is top notch -- as I am not as familiar in their fashions and style and language, I can't authoritatively judge -- but it would be hard to top the Departed in those areas. And I agree. The Departed is right up there with Goodfellas.
