I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but X-Men Destiny is definitely a let-down. I had it pre-purchased, but after our home budget got slashed in half due to wife's layoff, I decided to just add it to my Gamefly Q. It arrived yesterday, and I finished the game with one character in 5 hours. Now, you might be thinking, well, there are 3 characters, so that's 15 hours. The problem with that is that the game feels exactly the same. I went with the jock the first time and sided with the X-men (I guess it's a bad sign about the story when I cannot even remember his name). I started a new game with the female character and went the Brotherhood route. I only made it about half way through the second playthrough before boredom drove me away. The intro cinema is different when you pick a different character, but the levels play out EXACTLY the same. The difference between Xavier and Brotherhood didn't seem to be that much other than different character cameos. But, in the end, the worse offense is the fighting engine. You have 3 different powers (energy projection, shadow energy, and body density (think Colossus for a general idea). So, you would think there would be different strategies. The body density jock on my first playthrough basically punched his way through the bad guys like the tank he was. So, I went with the female with energy projection, think I would be sniping bad guys from afar. Nope. I am still beating guys up same style as before, just with a new lighting effect. Very disappointing.
If you are an X-men fan, the game might be worth a rental for a least one play through (the story isn't great, but it entertained me for the afternoon). And maybe a purchase when it hits the 10 to 20 dollar range. But, in my opinion, the game is a huge waste of money at 60 bucks. Here's hoping Gamefly sends me Rage and Dark Souls next week ... that should be a great game feast after the X-men "appetizer".
