Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

That's quite an antagonistic stance. What do you have against the Wii?

For other people, absolutely nothing, actually. If you or others like it, I am happy they are happy kinda deal

That said, I hate (personally) how the wii was passed off as the new standard for gaming when, in reality, its not very good.

Its one of the irratonal kinda deals with me...I just hate them on almost every level....and I cant quite put my finger on any one thing, really.

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

For those of you that have it: How far are you from the sensor? Microsoft says the minimum is 6 feet, is that accurate? Where does the Kinect bar need to be? Can it live at the bottom of the TV, or does it need to be up top? Does it get in the way of the Wii sensor?

You need room for the Kinect. 6 feet is the minimum for ONE player. If you want two then you will need more. When I play 2 players I bump in to my couch all of the time and sometimes bump the couch even in one player games.

I have my Kinect on top of my TV to keep it away from the cats and the Wii sensor. I don't see how you could have both under your TV unless you have something to raise either the sensor or the Kinect. One downside to the Kinect is it comes with no way to mount it under or above the TV so be prepared to buy some kind of stand or mount.

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

Is the 6 feet a hard line you cannot cross? Meaning, if the game requires, could you step forward a foot?

My current setup puts me 8 ft from the television (with couch at my heel), so I'm wondering if it will work for me...

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

maybe i'm old school but hands free gaming does not appeal to me at all...it's a cool idea and looks fun as a party game....but not something i personally will buy

I like a controller in my hand while i sit back and just chill....

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

Kinect could report what it sees to advertisers?

Speaking at an investor's conference on Thursday, a Microsoft executive offered that Kinect not only knows how many are in the room when an ad's shown, but what kind of team colors they might be wearing. Uh-oh.

At the BMO Capital Markets forum, Dennis Durkin, the chief operating officer of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment division, offered that if someone were watching a sporting event with Kinect on (for example, ESPN's new streaming service to the Xbox 360), Kinect could deduce what team they support based on what kind of jersey or colors they wore, and serve advertising tailored to that.

Digital Trends offers that it's not much different from how Facebook serves its ads, though in that case, there's something of an active opt-in (choosing to publicize your favorite films, food, sports teams, your alma mater, etc.) Durkin's example carries the implication that you don't know you're being watched - basically, studied - for marketing purposes. The results would be aggregated of course - charts and numbers, not a piece of raw video of you saved and stored somewhere - but it still sounds Orwellian.

Orwellian enough that when the Wall Street Journal mentioned it, Microsoft issued this statement:

["Xbox 360 and Xbox Live do not use any information captured by Kinect for advertising targeting purposes. Microsoft has a strong track record of implementing some of the best privacy protection measures in the industry. We place great importance on the privacy of our customers' information and the safety of their experiences."]

But if we're to take Durkin at his word, it means the capability is there, regardless of whether it's being used.

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

Picked up the Kenetic, Slim and Adventure games combo yesterday. Got the Zumba for the misses. Have to say this is pretty damn kewl. The response time is good and the facial recognition is neat.

Told my wife to get rid of the wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

I think I'm going to pick up the 360 and Kinect bundle for a buddy of mine who helped me out with some electrical work on my house....he has a 5 year old and I'm sure he'll love this.

Re: Xbox 360 Kinect Discussion

The wife specifically requested Dance Central and Kinect for Christmas so I picked them up this weekend. I'm going to wrap it up under the tree but I'm really interested to see how it plays first hand.

There is more in the article. If this was where Kinect was going, I'd sign up.
