PL has quite a few horrific moments. It has a fantasy style plot but also has elements found in many horror movies.

Yeah I'm going to watch it tonight because I can't wait to see Criterion's picture quality improvement, but I'll keep it off my Halloween list.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the best examples of implied violence put to film. Sound, abrupt action, and rapid cuts over gore.

Agreed. Nothing was implied on S7 Ep1 of TWD. They didn't hold back.

You know I don't mind horror movies, but things like the Hills have Eyes and TCM remakes and Hostel really don't appeal to me. Somebody getting their brains bashed out by another human being in a zombie infested world is just excessively unnecessary and vile to me. And lets just drag it on for 20 minutes....

It's definitely hard to watch. But it's nothing that hasn't already been done before in cinema. What makes it different is that the viewers who have been following the show have invested a lot of time into this group and all the characters involved. You care for these people and have a genuine concern for them.
Otherwise, there's actually much more cruel acts of murder from other movies that have come before this.
It's not for everyone.
