I have the original Rainman Chaplin, and it doesn't bother me a bit that he's got an "Encore Edition" Chaplin now. I love the second one, but I don't think it's better -- just a new interpretation. I do not believe the new release has any effect on the value of my figure, at least not among collectors of this type of fine art. It's still Rainman's first Chaplin, and its value rides on his reputation, and how his work overall is valued. If he were to release more than the announced edition of 20 of the one I've got, I'd feel very differently, and he would lose credibility, and that's why I don't expect to see it happen.
With regard to the "Gunman" Clint figure, I suspect future offerings of do-it-yourself kits, not numbered or signed, will probably be priced higher in light of the reactions here. Maybe they should be. Maybe Rainman decided he'd priced the Lee Van Cleef kits incorrectly; I think they were a bit higher in relation to the signed limited edition. I can't quite recall, and he removes the prices once an offering is sold out, which may indicate that he's still feeling out his audience -- his natural patrons. It also indicates, I think, his recognition that art works have unique value that has little to do with the first offered price. They are worth what the market will bear. If they become sought after, they appreciate in value.
I think some people here are just discovering the difference between collecting figures and collecting
artists. Rainman's marketing practice is similar to what is done in other areas of fine arts, such as photography or sculpture. It may be that, since most of the work we discuss on this forum is work-for-hire, you didn't realize what kind of world you'd entered, but if you bought one of the 20 signed Gunman figures, I think, as Zuno says, that in time you'll discover that you made a wise investment, because Rainman's reputation will continue to grow. His signed, limited editions will increase in value, the kits less so.
This won't do me any good, because I have no intention of selling, though someone knowledgeable about Korean 1:6 artists once asked me to name my price for that Chaplin. Like Zuno's figure, my Rainman art will probably be sold by my wife after I'm dust.
