Good news from Rainman.
He decided to sell the "clothing set" and "clothing + HS set".
But they are very limited.
The clothing set is limited 5 and The clothing + HS set is limited 15 for outside Korea.

We will begin accepting pre-orders after 1pm, Monday, May 25 (centural time (DST), U.S.A.), no sooner.
It may close earlier if it’s sold out. (first-come-first-serve basis)
It will be shipped in early of July, 2009

Thanks,

As excited as I am to be getting the figure, and I don';t want to sound ungreatful I honestly have to say I wish we knew about the head and clothing sets before yesterday. But Im ok with getting the full figure and not the head set but I'd be lying if I did not say that the price jump is pretty unfair. I think Rainman is justified with charging high prices for his great artwork considering the labor time and attention to detail not to mention the supplies. but how can the clothing and head be almost half the price?? This doesn't seem fair to me since its roughly the same amount of work, the difference is a truetype which ranges from 30-50 dollars, not 270.

the limited set includes the following:
1. a special accessory that is not included in the regular set - it is secret, but for the gunman figure, it was an additional gun
2. a beautiful wooden box
3. Rainman's signature on the item
4. true type body

I think the difference is that in one case you get a highly exclusive figure, with authenticity certificate and collectors box, and in the other you just get a very nifty outfit and head sculpt to kit bash your own figure.
So in one case, you have one of what, 20-30, figures?
In the other you get stuff to make your own custom/kit-bash.

You can't just add up parts here...

Even still, it seems like a bit of a high price jump. I am IN NO WAY meaning to disrespect Zuno or Rainman. Rainman is a God for making something this cool and Zuno AWESOME to get it to us, and I feel privileged to own one, but… I can’t be the only one slightly upset about this. I know the box will be amazing and the extra gun be cool, and its more of a collectors item with the signiture and serial number, but those three little extras still don’t quite seem to justify twice the price to me??

Hi friend,

It's for the name value.
You will get a perfect version of his original artwork.
His signature and serial number on the certification will be proof that it is authentic and rare.
And you will get one secret item, of the limited 20, worldwide.
It will be very valuable to your collection.

As you may know, I'm a customizer.
But I also ordered one of 20 because I want to keep the his original, limited artwork forever.
(I guess my wife will put it up at auction after I die... :naughty)

Be proud of your ordering... :)

Thanks,

man i'm really hoping to get my hands on this but i'm worried i'll miss out. how long do these things usually take to sell out? a couple mins? i'll be there on the dot to try my best anyway. this is the set i've been waiting for for years. really hope i make the cut. thanks to zuno and rainman for these wonderful items!

After seeing zuno's pics of his Van Cleef gunman, and seeing the great presentation and packaging, I had planned to get the limited version of Blondie as I wanted 1 fully complete figure from Rainman. Granted it was a huge, huge purchase but one I would've gone for if the reg sets had also been available at that time.

I'm very glad that he is offering reg sets for others and VERY much hope he will continue to do so for the rest of his gunman series. I just hope that the bonus item with Blondie is impressive and significant.

What would make me extremely upset or feel cheated is if he revisits or improves on a figure I purchased, as he has done with Chaplin 2.0. I would hate it if he does that with the Gunman figures. It's really one of the things I worry about buying expensive customs like this. Some reassurance that he will not do that would be nice. The 2 versions of Van Cleef as Col. Mortimer and Angel Eyes are different enough that it's ok, not so with Blondie. There are too many other characters out there for Rainman to make without revisiting previous work.

It looks like there is still one available on his site. Someone must have canceled.

Unfortunately its a risk with any figure you buy. Look at Hot Toys. Plenty of figures we thought were great at the time then get blown away by a re-release. Its part of the hobby - buy what you enjoy and if something better comes along upgrade, add or mix and match. It certainly can get expensive but that's why I don't look at my collection as an investment - it is an expense that happens to be maybe worth something if I tried to sell it.

A big company like Hot Toys that mass produces figures, yes. No worries. An individual figure maker hand crafting a small number of limited edition individually numbered high end customs, no. Not cool.

That looks brilliant! Really cool exclusive item.

Hmmm, may I ask why?
What is the difference?

If the "individual figure maker hand crafting a small number of limited edition individually numbered high end customs" decides to revisit a theme or redo a figure, why shouldn't he? I really don't understand.

I have the original Rainman Chaplin, and it doesn't bother me a bit that he's got an "Encore Edition" Chaplin now. I love the second one, but I don't think it's better -- just a new interpretation. I do not believe the new release has any effect on the value of my figure, at least not among collectors of this type of fine art. It's still Rainman's first Chaplin, and its value rides on his reputation, and how his work overall is valued. If he were to release more than the announced edition of 20 of the one I've got, I'd feel very differently, and he would lose credibility, and that's why I don't expect to see it happen.

With regard to the "Gunman" Clint figure, I suspect future offerings of do-it-yourself kits, not numbered or signed, will probably be priced higher in light of the reactions here. Maybe they should be. Maybe Rainman decided he'd priced the Lee Van Cleef kits incorrectly; I think they were a bit higher in relation to the signed limited edition. I can't quite recall, and he removes the prices once an offering is sold out, which may indicate that he's still feeling out his audience -- his natural patrons. It also indicates, I think, his recognition that art works have unique value that has little to do with the first offered price. They are worth what the market will bear. If they become sought after, they appreciate in value.

I think some people here are just discovering the difference between collecting figures and collecting artists. Rainman's marketing practice is similar to what is done in other areas of fine arts, such as photography or sculpture. It may be that, since most of the work we discuss on this forum is work-for-hire, you didn't realize what kind of world you'd entered, but if you bought one of the 20 signed Gunman figures, I think, as Zuno says, that in time you'll discover that you made a wise investment, because Rainman's reputation will continue to grow. His signed, limited editions will increase in value, the kits less so.

This won't do me any good, because I have no intention of selling, though someone knowledgeable about Korean 1:6 artists once asked me to name my price for that Chaplin. Like Zuno's figure, my Rainman art will probably be sold by my wife after I'm dust.
