Wait what is this story about? And who is the lead character? I couldn't figure out anything from that confusing trailer, and it basically reminded me of every other bloated historical epic Scott likes to make these days.

It's a far cry from those fantastic trailers for the original movie.
Romans bad, kill Romans. Cue violence.

Seems obvious Lucius(Mescal) is the lead.
And plot pretty straight forward if you know the original:
After Maximus' death Lucius(Mescal) is likely hidden away to protect him, yet somehow ends up a slave/gladiator to Macrinus(Washington), who is using him to bring down Rome's corrupt Emperors (Geta y Caracalla) who are similarly using Marcus Acacius(Pascal) as their tool in the Arena.
Lucilla is probably torn between them, as one(Pascal) was loyal to Maximus and the Rome ideal(now apparently her lover) the other(Mescal) is her son (who she likely didn't know was now a gladiator.

Yeah I assumed the son was the lead, but the trailer was all over the place and seemed more interested in Denzel. And I just don't get the sense this will have the same kind of clear, focused story as the original.

It does, though obviously more contrived, it seems so far a somewhat one-to-one reworking:
Just swap Maximus for Lucius(Mescal); who has to get back to a corrupt Rome, uses the Arena as the vehicle to face his enemies.
Proximo for Macrinus(Washington): Uses Gladiators for his own personal gain (though here motivated more politicly)
(superficially) Commodus for brats Geta y Caracalla: corrupt inheritors of the throne,
Quintus/Commodus for Acacius(Pascal)(albeit much expanded complex role): Loyal soldier, conflicted as he likely realizes he's a pawn on the wrong side.
Lucilla: The same, likely trying to survive in a den of corruption, realizes Maximus Lucius is alive and in the arena, watches him become a symbol for the masses.

I have always wanted to see a modern version of the boat fights, I was so happy when I saw that in the trailer.

one reason that I always loved the sequel to 300 it was their boat battles. I'm so excited for that in here.

Agree the trailer is awful but I would never judge a film based on a piece of rushed out marketing. Ridley has been hit and miss these past few years but I thought The Last Duel was amazing so it’s still possible he can deliver.

i have really good hopes for this. visually it looks just as good as the first one. all the actors look good in their roles.

Dunno if it will be as good as the first - BUT - that's not to say it won't be really good.(y)

Seems to be getting some hate online *shrug* but it's not like someone is taking the first film away. I don't expect 2x miracles, and the director is a favorite of mine.

Denzel seems to be having a good time. Pascal is a good actor. It's got spectacle and some (more) creepy twins:monkey3 or something. Like little psycho GOT Joffreys.
