I wouldn't say it was popular at all. It was very niche. Even well into the 90's it was very niche.
You can't compare its popularity even 20 years ago to what it is now.
It's wildly popular with younger generations, way more than more than my generation.
My humble little comment was simply to say I don't like anime so will be skipping this, but that's ok, youngsters like anime a lot. To me 30 year olds are youngsters.

Never said it was new. Just pointed out how popular it currently is. My second post was to point out how it was significantly more niche in the 70's, 80's and 90's and even 00's compared to today and that others will be very happy about this being anime.
