That’s such a load of crap that Chang isn’t popular enough. I’d say he’s top three TOS movie villains.
Agreed. Plus the fact it's freakin Christopher Plummer. And it would be a great companion with the eventual TUC figures.

Most importantly, it's a badass looking costume that would look amazing in the collection.

This will be a good business decision when they start the TUC line and the only way to get the main villain is when it's going for 800 plus on Ebay.

I honestly don't see much difference.
The mouth is the biggest difference. Other things are more subtle. If only they'd gotten his eyelids right the likeness would probably be dead on, but as a big fan of Doctor McCoy since I was a wee lad, I can see quite a bit more of him in the new portrait than the old one.

So now the Gorn is also a Section 31 release? 😡

This is truly sad to hear. First the tease for months and years on some of the figures the hard core fans want and then when it is about to be released, figures will only go to his cult following. Well, fellas I hope you didn’t buy every release because your loyalty will be forgotten

“Section 31” has been loosely talked about for a few years now and there’s nothing in place despite all that talk - seems like cage rattling more than anything at this point to drum up attention.

Well, I guess it's working. They seem to have our attention. That gorn is sweeeet.

So support the line, buy every figure, but SORRY you are not “special” enough for this one…or that one….gotcha. Why even continue purchasing if this is this in the pipeline?
Yeah I was already losing interest in the line, and this behavior is just making me want to move on entirely. And it truly feels like the only reason this S31 line exists is just to spite the people here in this forum, who have been buying his figures reliably for years now.

If he goes ahead with this idea, it is 100% GUARANTEED to adversely impact sales of other figures, because it will annoy people who are fans/buyers of any affected series.

For example, if Chang wasn't made available to everyone, I could live with that on a personal level as I'm not interested in getting him anyways, but it will sure as heck irritate those who do find it impossible to order. However, if the Gorn was limited to a subset of folks, THAT would tick me off no end.

If the relationship is soured to the point where bad practices spoil the collecting experience, people will simply stop buying.

I'm not sure what it would take to make any of us decide to stop pre-ordering certain lines, maybe even selling the figures we have in-hand, but everyone has a breaking point.

It will also encourage greedy scalpers who will only buy to resell.

It is just so unecessary . . . I see absolutely ZERO benefit to this proposed part of his business model - not for HIM, and not for CUSTOMERS . . . ONLY for scalpers.

you are not moving on Dave. You and many will continue to support and buy close to every figure he makes because you are a true die hard ST fan “ but” because you are not “ in “his group you will not get certain figures. And the only way you will get these figures is if you end up having to pay $300-$400 over retail per figure if he follow through with his private club. Very disappointing but it is the reality for many die hard fans who is not in his cult.

I suspect there could be corporate reasons why he's doing it, to hive off a part of the business that is riskier and will carry almost no profit. It simply will not have the funds to meet general demand and will be hand to mouth. I suspect he's actively seeking to discourage people who might express interest and then drop out because he perceives that they will increase the risks with low demand characters. Idle stock will probably sink this business model.

As far as losing other business on the back of that, the numbers on the remaining characters will be higher as they move into TNG and TOS, so the simple answer is that they can afford for some people to drop out. Reducing demand slightly might even help his business model at this stage, since he needs the factories and workers for multiple projects.

Pure speculation on my part but he seems to know what he's doing so far!

The thing is the Gorn Captain is a figure a lot of TOS fans want. Probably the most memorable/iconic TOS villain from a well known episode.

Why he would put a character like that behind some exclusive group that we don’t know the details of or if we’ll have a true chance at getting into is beyond me.

A character like Trelane I could see more. Still memorable but a tad more on the obscure side that only the really hardcore fans will want.

Maybe this is just his way of building hype by making it a more limited, and exclusive production run, similar to what Hot Toys has been doing with having to wait in the queue for a chance at some figure..however, instead of everyone having some limited chance for buying a figure in the queue, the figure will only be available to the special club…

My understanding is It's the manufacturing costs because it has a bespoke skin I suppose. It's too costly to produce in large numbers, presumably because its price point means a lot of people who claim they are interested will bow out. I think he caught a cold with Seven, who was arguably far more popular and doesn't want to go down that road again.

He may also have grossly underestimated interest.
