1/6 Doctor Who Figures - BCS and everything else

I bought this repainted sculpt from a fellow collector so i don't know how much Mark charges, but going from his instagram he takes commissions.

This is the guy that really turned me onto this sculpt before. He really brings it to life. Stunning work.

I bought the FabriCoat paint on Amazon, but you could try your local craft shop.

If you've never used this before i'd advise you do a test run first on a scrap piece of material, just to get some practise in.
Just follow the procedure in the video below and you won't go wrong. As the coat is only a small piece you won't need to use a whole lot of paint.
I used a small paint brush and sponge to apply it. Then an old tooth brush and nail brush to work it into the fabric. The most important part is to make sure the coat is nice and damp before you start painting.

Don't worry if you see a blotchy/patchy look after the first application. Dampen the coat down again with water and apply a second coat of paint, again using the same procedure with a tooth/nail brush to work the paint into the fabric.
And don't worry that you might do damage to the coat fabric with the nail brush. I gave my coat a good scrubbing over multiple times with no damage. Just be careful around the wee coat buttons.

Thanks so much! I will definitely give this method a go. I always wanted to bring the coat more in line with the screen version.

One more question in regard to the repaint. Did you had to sacrifice the blue lining on the inside? Or were you able to somehow avoid getting paint on it?

The paint will soak through to the inner lining, but you can whip off any excess with a damp sponge before it dries.

I gave your method a go today and I couldn't be happier with the result!

After a few hours of careful research and alot of swatching videos. I ended up buying Jacquard Textile Brown fabric paint to closer match the 10th Doctors coat from the screen reference photos (especially the one you used in your pictures above).

After one fairly generous coat I was very satisfied with the outcome. Here's a photo of the final product (almost dry) on the line outside. It might lighten up ever so slightly but I genuinely think a second coat will not be necessary.

I was also pleased not to sacrifice the beautiful blue satin lining Your advice was a huge help, without your post and explanation I don't think I would have had the confidence to tackle it on a random Thursday afternoon, so hats off to you good sir I thank you for helping me bring my Doctor ever closer to life and screen accuracy!

Next step will be repainting the head sculpt, I've reached out to Mark Simpson over Instagram for some reference photos, with a bit of luck he'll get back to me in the near future I'd also love to hear from the fantastic Mr. @Darren Carnall for any tips and reference photos for the latest David Tennat sculpt if he happens to be reading this forum any time soon

The new year begins with my first custom figure.
I repainted the Amy Pond head sculpt I got from BCS store last year, and now I have finally got around to buying a figure, clothes and boots for it - all sourced off eBay and Etsy. I repainted the boots and added detail to the hands.
I may buy another sculpt to repaint as the skin tone is not pale enough. This was my first go at painting a female sculpt.

I done some work on my 4th Dr figures over the festive period. I managed to pick up a coat from the Redman Toys Butcher figure. The material is not the best, but the cut and silhouette are a close match to the long brown coat Tom wore from his third season onwards.
I used RIT chocolate brown to dye it, and added some new buttons. The pocket flaps are way too small, but not noticeable once the scarf is on.

Using the same boiling pot of RIT chocolate brown dye, i dropped in the BCS coat for about 20 seconds.

I was pleasantly surprised with the result, as it now looks something more akin to the colour of the screen worn coat

Repainted the eyes and the sideburns on the Zavvi sculpt. I also swapped out the Zavvi hair piece for the one that came with smiling Tom version. It looks slighting fuller and i prefer the sculpt.

Matrix, that's an amazing job you've done on this! Even if all you did was the eye repaint, it still captures Tom Baker's expression so much better than the production. It's a real inspiratio! Thanks for sharing!!

Another mod i always wanted to do was to have the hat sit lower on the hair.

So using the Zavvi version i cut and sanded down the front of the hair piece. After A LOT of trial and error to get the hat to fit flush against the hair i'm pretty happy with the results.

For the hat repaints i mixing some watered down modeling clay to the paint. This gives it more of a flat fabric look rather than shiny plastic.

These are very inspiring but also disheartening to think how lacking the official product is and to get this level of accuracy you're probably looking at like 1K easily (considering the smiling head and all). Knocks me right into "when I win the lottery maybe someday" grail status.

The hairpiece mod is the other thing I've thought to correct on mine as well. I'm looking into having the eyes repainted for me but the hair mod is one I should be able to manage. Thanks again!!
As an aside, unfortunately the 1/6 scarf knitter won't sell to US folk......maybe I should take on knitting

Tom's most iconic look deserved better. I think BCS missed a trick in not upgrading the original 4th Dr figure with better paint apps, coat and scarf. They could have included both the stern and smiling sculpts in a nice deluxe set.

As expected my 11th Doctor arrived with only 2 buttons on his jacket despite all promotional material showing 3. Zavvi seem to have left out the 3rd button as an intended choice rather than a qc issue.

That just didn't work for me, I found the 3 button look to not only be aesthetically pleasing but most importantly screen accurate.
So I decided to manufacture my own.
One quick casting of the original buttons later I was left with a mold that looked quite nice. Perhaps the final result came out one size too large and the paint a shade off but still a very workable replacement.

Anyway here it Is. I think to the untrained eye it's definitely passible. Round two will be a much better final product but this will serve as a good enough place holder for now.

This haunts me every single time I visit this page. If BCS consistently put out this level of product, I would preorder day one. My dream (and perhaps nightmare based on current release schedule) would be for Exo-6 to gain the license after the "5Year Mission" tour is over. But I'm honestly not even sure Nanjin is interested in continuing beyond that. I would also be OK with (though not my first choice) for BCS continuing--even with the delays--if this level can be achieved. This is just drop dead gorgeous work @Matrix!

This was my set up at one time.

While Superman, the Dr. and Stormtrooper together, didn't faze me.
I find myself strangely fascinated by the particulars of the other shelf assortment.
Zorro, his Camel? Aztec calendar? and Golgotha display stand? Are these just random holdovers, or was there some fascinating display plan here?
