The 60th anniversary specials and christmas special all had good ratings along with being well received by fans, the new doctor is well liked by most, the show is being produced by a new team with a bigger budget than ever, and they've said they havent even started up the marketing machine yet (which they're reserving for the actual series 1 relaunch later this year). Plus, the show will be more easily accessible than ever, streaming on disney plus all over the world.
Doctor Who is most certainly in a much better position now than it has been the past few years. Only time will tell how well this relaunch will perform, but there's very little reason for pessimism right now unless you're a fan of youtube videos with a lot of bold text, photoshopped angry faces, and questionable sources.
With the show seemingly set to return to the public consciousness in a big way later this year, and the previous license holder now being out of the picture, I do think the stage is set for another company to step in. But Doctor Who is not historically a big merchandise cash cow in general, so it's up in air whether another company will find it worth the effort.
ThreeZero has been pushing harder into this market lately with some more obscure figures, this could be a great one for them to pick up. Plus their typical quality is higher than Big Chief ever was and at a lower price too.
But even if not, my curiosity turns toward unlicensed third parties, because they're pumping out more obscure figures constantly. Soosootoys, Toys Battalion, Toys Era, more and more of these are popping up and I'm just waiting for one of them to pick up the slack. There's a lot of unhappy big chief customers that got hung out to dry, wanting to buy figures that never came...
