Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I just heard about this, so I came back specifically to say how truly and honestly sorry I was to hear about his loss.

We had a disagreement quite recently, it got a bit heated, as sometimes tends to happen between those passionate about a subject, but who differ on the details, but despite anything I may have said at the time, I meant him no ill will, and I am truly saddened by his loss. He was a fellow fan, a fellow collector, and someone who wore his passions on his sleeve, which I always respected, and whether we agreed over something or not, the board, and I suspect the world at large, is a lesser place for his loss.

I feel shamed that some of his final time on this earth was spent in pointless argument with me. It may take two to tango, but I regret my part in it deeply, and suspect that had the opportunity arisen, all would have been forgiven and moved past in the fullness of time by us both. We passionate fans and collectors may butt heads occasionally, but few of us hold on to petty grudges, some times we just need to take a step back and simmer down a little. So I stepped away for a while, but I never dreamed that would be our final encounter, particularly after so many fun and interesting conversations in the past.

My sincerest condolences to his wife, his friends, and his family.

It's just something that happens on message boards. We debate. We argue. Then we get over it. I'm sure you two would have been wowing together about the Pertwee figure soon enough. :)

I thought about this today, and I definitely don't think you should beat yourself up about it. We all say things we regret later, me more than anyone. Daron was a very, very kind man and he would be the first to tell you to move on and forget it.

I've been thinking about Daron today a lot and his impact on me. I have a tendency to get into arguments with people. I blame this partly on the fact that I suffer from Asperger's Syndrome, partly on my own character flaws. But although I was never great friends with Daron, and didn't know him outside the board, we became board buddies - one of many such friendships Daron had - and he definitely influenced the way I express myself in these threads. I think - I hope - I've dialled myself down a bit over the year or two, and much of that is down to his moderating influence on me.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Hi all,

Daron aka DGTWoodward passed away by a sudden heart attack on the eve of 19th Dec, here is a link to the thread started by his wife notifying us:
https://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137918

I have been speaking with Sharon, (Mrs DGTWoodward) and she has been gracious and kind enough to let us as a community send a token of respect to herself and her family, not to mention Daron.

We (Dave and mods) have agreed that we are going to pay our respects to our friend Daron aka DGTWoodward by having a collection which I will organise to send flowers to the family on or before the funeral.
The date of the funeral is not known yet but we can do this and send our thoughts to not only Daron but also his wife and family.

So, if anyone would like to make a contribution or donate towards this, please send me a message and I will let you know the details. I am in the UK so will sort out flowers and things and will try include all usernames of those who donate, on the cards of the flowers/ items we send.

Hopefully we can pay our respects not only to a member of our community who we have sadly lost, but also another member - his wife who is also an avid collector, along with their family.

If you would like to take part, please pm me and I will send you my details.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

So I'm wondering, for those who have taken delivery of their Tom (or David, Matt or Karen for that matter), and allowing for the fact Big Chief are still pretty much a startup company, does the build quality justify the Hot Toys-like pricetag?

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Hey Prime Clone. For me it's swings and roundabouts really. The Amy Pond figure is no way worth the pricetag in my view, so personally speaking I'd just rule that one right out, especially at this price range. But the three Doctor releases I own all have their ups and downs, as most figures in this scale tend to do.

Broadly speaking, the body is serviceable enough, but certainly not as good as certain other high end manufacturers, and can be prone to being a bit too 'floppy'. Mind you, that said all three of my Doctors are standing without aid of a stand, and haven't fallen so far. You also usually get quite a nice range of accessories and hands, along with a pretty decent base as well.

The tailoring is, for the most part, very good indeed. There are occasional quirks (the scarf on the Fourth Doctor springs to mind), but for the most part it fits well, hangs well, and is pretty accurate overall.

The packaging really is top of the line. I'm not one that is usually that wowed by packaging, but they do a seriously impressive job with the boxes for these releases, and it certainly adds to the wow factor of receiving one of these pieces.

The likenesses are (usually) very good indeed, so far. I'm still not 100% sold on the Tom Baker, but it's growing on me, particularly with the hat on.

The paint applications are getting progressively better from release to release, though there are still quirks (such as the inexplicable 'unshaven' look), and while quite good for the scale, the paint is, in all honesty, still nowhere near as good or realistic as what Hot Toys usually manages. But then, very few other manufacturers can come close to that either.

Overall I'd have to say that I'm very happy that I own all three Doctors, even at the price. They aren't the best 1:6 scale figures on the market, but they are easily the best Doctor Who figures we've ever seen, and overall I'd still rate them quite easily as higher echelon pieces, even with their foibles.

And though I do complain about the price sometimes, for the most part it's just the cost of producing such a niche collectible on lower numbers to a smaller, dedicated market, really. Or at least that's how I justify it to myself anyhow. :lol

I guess the biggest test is knowing everything I know now, and having seen and had each one in hand, would I buy them again at the same price now if I didn't actually own them already? And as a Doctor Who fan, yes I would. So if you're a huge fan, I'd say they are worth it if you can afford it. If you are a casual fan...well, it is a lot of money. :lol

Sorry for the long post.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

No problem, thanks very much for the comprehensive reply. Looking forward to getting my Four in the New Year!

I would say it's very, very close. I bodies aren't as nice as Hot Toys, but they don't feel cheap. They have nice range of movement and to be honest MOST of the joints are actually quite tight. No floppy arms or anything like that. It seems like the hips or legs are the weaker points on some of the figures. My 11th Doctor body is perfect. My 10th is great. It's only my 4th Doctor that has some weakness there.

But overall, I'm pleased.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

The bodies are inferior to Hot Toys truetypes but still better than a Sideshow Pro. Loose joints, limbs, ankles. For me it's the one thing that makes it not worth the high price tag. I would say better than Sideshow, not as good as Hot Toys. Somewhere in between.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

My first post here. Hello all!

I got to pull my Tom from under the tree today. I must admit that seeing the prototype I had some minor reservations. Still, I thought, a 1/6 Tom? Only a thousand being sold? How could I not?

Having it in hand today all my reservations are gone. I love the head sculpt. If you tilt the head and get the arms a certain way then there is a little Tom on your shelf, ready to come to life. The five o'clock shadow is not too strong on mine, but more like a subtle shading (on screen he didn't really ever have stubble, but it does add a life-like quality to the figure).

The ankles are a bit weak but it is the same on my Hot Toys Jack Nicholson Joker, so I can't say Big Chief are any worse than their peers there. Oh and I suppose bubbles in the key to time, but that doesn't actually bother me. I never intended to pose the figure often with that accessory and the bubbles don't really make the key look that bad to me. It's like a key to time lava lamp. I understand if big fans of that season are miffed, though. Looks good sitting next to my base being snatched at by a fiendish hand of Eldrad.

I'm not listing positives because everything else seems pretty top notch as far as I can see. It's a case of 'much better in the hand then in the advertisements'.

I'd post a photo but I am too much of a newbie to be allowed to post images yet!

Hope everyone else is having as much fun with their figures as I am with mine. I am a little boy again. The Tom Baker fan in me is delighted!

Hello! What a lovely first post! Welcome to you sir. I know just how you feel, the little me is over the moon with this figure. And having been a Hot Toys collector for years now I agree that the figure holds it's own on the shelf very well. Lava lamp key to time made me laugh!
Happy Christmas to you and little Tom!

Welcome and congratulations!

Would you all believe I'm still waiting for my figures? They were out on the truck yesterday and FEDEX just got too busy to get to my house yesterday, so I'm waiting again.....

I am AMAZED that BC is getting them to me by Christmas all the same. I blew past that 12/12 deadline and they're still managing it!

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

I know! BC are amazing at getting this stuff out! They seem like good guys. I've found them very helpful whenever I've contacted them too.

Re: Big Chief Studios - 1/6 Doctor Who - #04 Tom Baker

Well, mine got to my dad before Christmas.
He said he sent one over 5 days ago. So I'll get 4 or 10 in 5 days time.

Mind you, there's the Christmas episode in the next 24 hours.
